Hi there, I'm from Portugal and I'de like to know if this engine (2.4TD) has any know problems, like the 1.9TD (cracking engine heads)...

I'm thinking about installing the 2.4TD on my 1.9TD bravo, is it at least 90% compatible?

Cheers (y)

I'm no expert but I would think this is a pretty big conversion for not much of an increase.
Suspension won't handle the weight of the new engine. So that would have to be uprated. Brakes aswell. also your ECU will not be able to run the 5 pot either. Then theres gearboxes and drive shafts to think about.

If you were gonna do it I'd recommend waitng till you get your hands on a 2.4 JTD 130 engine. From what I'm told it may only be 5bhp more but its a far superior engine.

Well how do you mean, i'd imagine you'd need to strip everything out including the running gear as if i remember correctly the 2.4 has a wider stance, obviously you'd need to swap, ecu, wiring loom, brakes, lock barrels. The 2.4 Marea has wider wings than your bravo, and a different front bumper to accommodate.

My car has the Marea full conversion up front (bumper and side panels)
Yes I'm aware that the gearbox isn't compatible, the "package" that someone offered me was Engine, Gearbox and ECU, my big question is about the rest of the wiring loom...
That's what really scares the crap out of me, since this kind of project is very rare in my country... and who does them, keep the changes secret (n)

The car is lowered and sitting on 16" Stilo wheels (soon on OZ F1) and Brembo Max brake discs with EBC pads, but recently bought the Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo brembo plus calipers and discs :D

Here's a few pics of the little devil wannabee:eek:

Thanks :D
I hope someone can help me with this... Looking forward to get my hands on a 5cils engine, that sound kills me :D :slayer:

Cheers :)

nice bravo.

you are correct the wiring will be a nightmare. you need to get the wiring diagrams for both engines and compare them, anything the new engine needs that you dont already have will need to be added to the loom. then you need to identify differences in both the position and wiring of all the common electronics. if the same number of wires are used, and the current length and position is ok, then you are fine, but in many cases you will need to change the position of the wires. you will need to replace almost all of the connectors, and the ecu connector. connecting the new ecu connector to the existing loom is a real pain, that alone has taken me more than a day in the past. its often better to replace the whole loom, using a donor car to take the correct loom from.

with the new ecu you have immob issues to deal with. you need the codebox and red key chip that matches the ecu you buy, without them you will need to disable your immobiliser by hardwiring an earth on the fuel pump, this means you car can be easily stolen.

thats the tip of the iceberg, what you do about engine and gearbox mounts, driveshafts, gear selector and linkages, etc etc etc is up to you, but the wiring loom differences are almost always the most difficult and time consuming stage, and often the cause of problems once fitted.

If I were you I'd basically swap everything at the front, including as much of the electrics as you can. Subframe, hubs, brakes, ECU, dials, everything. I looked into this but did not get a suitable broken 2.4 and 1.9 available at the right price.

I've never heard of a TD cracking it's head at all. Do people there like driving through deep puddles?

The 5pot is a good project providing you can get enough of the donor car. It's an extra 25bhp and nearly 100Nm torque? Certainly worth trying in the JTD form.

You're right, but i've managed to buy a full Marea Weekend 2.4TD with all the mechanical and electrical parts intact! :D

All that my mechanic has to do is... waste a few days (probably 1week or so) doing the transplant on my little bravo :D

Sorry but my english is a bit weak... what does that mean?

I'm going for a full transplant, including the bigger brakes, drive shafts, gearbox (obviously) and everything that's bigger than the bravo stock parts  including the rear axle with disc brakes, mine doesn't have them...

The only thing the donor doesn't have are the dials... but that's a minor fault

The 2.4 is a 125hp and 265nm, much better than the 1.9TD100 with 200nm...
Transforming mine into JTD form should be the real nightmare, even the interior loom would have to be replaced... and it's very very very dificult to find a 2.4JTD in any scrapyard here...

Monday will be the starting day, the Marea has arrived today at the workshop and I can't wait for the process to begin... or even to end:slayer:

Here are some pics of the 2.4, except for the looks, it's almost in mint condition:)

Front brake calipers, just begging for Brembo Max brake discs :D

And that's it... tomorrow i'm planning on having higher quality pics, since the workshop is almost 30miles away from my house :yuck:

Sorry for my bad english

Cheers ;)

If you say so :D
My mechanic has very good prices on those things, for something like 10/15£ extra he gives me the brembo max or Tarox G88 brake discs...
But since i'm going to try to increase the power up to 140/145hp... maybe i'll need more brake power! :chin:

Can't wait to get my hands on my little 2.4TD bravo:devil:

Cheers ;)

If you can get Brembo discs for an extra £10 then do so, as they dont seem to get surface rust due to the way they are treated.

IIRC they are exactly the same callipers used to tame the HGT's 154 horses.
