My marea 1.6 SX Weekend has a strange noise and I can't figure out what it is. Let me try to explain,,,,

It sounds like it's coming from the gear box or transmission area,,I think.
It's not a whirring or rubbing noise,,,and neither is it a terrrible gringing noise.
It's more of a light, loose sounding continuous rattle,,,if that makes any sense.

It happens when accellerating, or when braking (or engine braking,,,it's nothing to do with the brakes) The only time it is not there is when the car is resting at a steady speed, or when coasting.
It's as though it happens when any sort of force is being put on the transmission, either positive when putting your foot down, or negative when you lift off.

I know enough about cars to identify a dodgy cv joint, wheel bearing or anti roll bar bush,,but know zip about gearboxes and engines!
I think it must be some sort of bearing,,,a thrust bearing has been mentioned but I don't know what that is,,,do you think it's a possibility?

Somebody else has suggested it could be something loose under the car that is just vibrating when the engine is at certain revs,,but I know that's not right,,,,you know when you just know?

It isn't causing any adverse effects on driving, and it's been like this for about a year, thought it is slowly getting worse. When I first noticed it ages ago I took it to a garage and they thought it was all in my head!!!

I just want to know if it's going to be expensive,,,and if i should sell it now before it gets worse! (and get another one the same of course,,,but maybe in black!)

the thrust bearing is just the thing that gets pushed when you press on the clutch pedal. the thrust bearing is thrusted against the fingers of the diaphragm spring to disengage it from the flywheel. if the thrust bearing was noisey, the noise would only appear with the clutch pedal pressed, so it cant be that.

personally i think its a bearing in the gearbox, which should not be a problem for a long time yet. once it gets very noisey change the gearbox with a scrapyard one.

Or couldn't you just put sawdist in the gearbox & sell it on? I'm sure that's what my Uncle "Dodgy" Vince used to do. I would ask him but he moved to Marbella 12 years ago & doesn't seem to keep in touch with anybody.

that old trick!

a better idea is to pack the gearbox with bearing grease.
a few minutes later it will be smooth and silent
(who cares what happens next week, its sold as seen :D)
