Technical Marea jtd130 hlx acceleration issues

Hello,

Thank you for the advice. I have been to FiatECUScan and now can access the ECU for my car. Amazing what can be achieved when one actually bothers to read the instructions.

Anyway, I cleared down the fault codes (5 of them) and went for a drive. The only fault code to come back was the throttle position sensor. I think I may have found my answer at last.

I will report back once I have fitted the news part.

Hello Again,

I have been looking around and I believe the part I require is the accelerator potentiometer (Fiat part no 46512475). The trouble is, this part costs upwards of £400 (£333 + Vat in 2004 Eper) from Fiat which is probably as much as the car is worth.

Does anybody have any advice on where I could get one cheaper. I have Googled around without any success. If I cannot get hold of one at reasonable money, I am probably facing having to sell the car.

I have put out a couple of enquiries to the online secondhand parts places and am waiting to see if there is any response. In the meantime, I will try a few parts shops and motor factors and see what I can come up with. However, I was looking at the wrong part number last night and the cost is more like £300.

I am sure I have read on this site somewhere that the connections to the potentiometer are known to be a bit iffy so I will be checking that out before doing anything else.

To be honest though, I am more inclined just to get rid and have done with it. I have owned it for 3 years and this is the latest in a long line of expensive faults with this car. Previously I had a TD SX Tempra for 10 years and it was far more reliable (and comfortable!!) than my Marea has been.

The MOT is due next week. Is it likely to actually pass with this fault?

There's no reason for it to fail, as long as it will rev for the emmisions test and then return to idle.
I've had my Marea 110JTD for almost a year and the only expensive problem was my fault for not seeing a hump back bridge in time (oops). Apart from a few squeaks and rattles it has been pretty much faultless, and amazingly comfortable (much better than my previous car, a Mondeo - which was itself the most comfortable car I ever owned). I wasn't expecting much either, since it was cheap and is a bit tatty to look at.

If yours has been very expensive, I would say that it is probably worth getting rid and looking for something else. If I had to spend £300 on mine, I would think twice but probably fix it. If I had to spend that much again, soon after, I would get rid

Hello Again,

Latest update. I got lucky and sourced a second hand TPS from Breakeryard.com for £60.00 + P&P (£71.00 in all). I have fitted it today. What a b******d of a job. Seven hours of lying on my back scraping my arms under the dashboard. The access to this part is horrendous to say the least.

Anyway, my Marea is now back to its old self pulling like a train and making that wonderful 5 cylinder noise while it is about it.

Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions which have also helped me track down and sort a few unrelated problems as well (the rotten air pipe for instance).

Hopefully I will get a good while of trouble free motoring before it throws the next expensive problem at me.

Regards

Ian

Well thank you for the well done. It may be a bit premature though as the bloody thing failed it's MOT because it is rusty underneath and requires welding in about four different places. I really thought Fiat had left this sort of problem behind. My old Tempra was still solid when I got rid of it.

The potientiometer, if it is the same design as mine can be found under the dashboard above the brake and clutch pedals. It is a round black pot with a lever on it. It may have a plug above it or it may not. Also, depending on how late a model your 1.9 JTD is, it may have a pedal potentiometer which is a squarish box built on directly behind the pedal. I believe these are replaced as an entire unit. Good luck on that.

I will get an MOT on the Marea and get rid of it in a couple of months.

Hello,
I am currently having some issues of acceleration with my Marea (the JTD130 2.4 model). A diagnostic check by my local Fiat dealer narrowed the problem to the infamous MAF sensor which I have now replaced.

The original problem involved an intermittent loss of power. With the new MAF fitted, the car produces a little more power but still has the intermittent power loss.
Any advice would be gratefully received.
Regards

I am having a similar problem on a Marea TD 100 - on mine the effect appears mainly at around 1200RPM at light load and only when the engine has had time to warm up fully. After motoring several 100 km on the Autobahn the effect disappears only to reappear on the following day...
Absolutely untraceable at the AA or at any Fiat garage! When it occurs in town traffic (it can only occur under this condition) I just decouple for a second or two and it´s gone because just squeezing the accelerator down makes the car jump forward.
No faults get stored in the ECU.

Any ideas?

Any ideas?

As with any diesel, check the EGR passages are clean and the valve is not stuck.

Sounds like it could be sticking open as EGR opens at light loads to reduce emissions.
