Technical Marea 2.4 TD tickover

When I start my Marea 2.4TD from cold and leave it to tick over, it hunts i.e. it seems to increase and decrease revs. It was worse before a mechanic fixed something to do with the air intake - apparently a hose was split and a vacuum was not being formed. It still hunts now although not as bad. Any ideas what this might be caused by? The car has recently had a full service.

Not sure if the TD uses an electronic tickover regulator or not. If so then oil blocking the breather pipes can cause a mis-reading and then you will see hunting.
