Look at it another way. Some folk say don't portmatch the exhausts -- just remove any obvious casting flaws. This is the easiest and safest option.
Others say, portmatch only at the top (where gas flow is the highest). Depending on the match with the exhaust manifold, this may be leave a step at the bottom. This is a good thing.
Dave Vizard did development on Pinto heads which led him to come up with an anti flow reversion insert which fitted between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust ports. This was for a highlt developed race engine.
The supersprint 8v manifolds only match the exhaust ports, more or less, at top and bottom -- they use round tube, where the ports are oval. It seems to work.
You get the idea?
No finish finer than 80 grit is required. Stay away from the valve guides and valve seats. Get all the grit out. Finally, recut the valves, skim the head, do the shims.
None of this is simple and there are no guarantees. Read. Read. Read. Anything by Corky Bell, A Graham Bell, Dave Walker or Guy Croft (not necessarily in that order) is worth reading.
