I can use a jigsaw :) that's a start I suppose.

Okay just a few questions (and moans)..

Firstly, I'm not paying £85 for a double 15" Sub box.. do I have retard plastered across my forehead? NO! ok.. next..

I guess it just takes a lot of common sense to make a box to the correct specifications... I know the correct sizes for the box that I need and space inside, my question(s) is just that does anyone have any tips/pointers etc, things to look out for when making one of these. Any help or guidelines would be appreciated. If not.. then I'll just have to get off my ass and go find someone who's good at woodwork.

(This is my summer project btw) :)

Ian.

Ian,

Having just ordered my first Amp i'll be doing the same thing very soon. I didn't want to order a box because they all look pants and not very subtle. I'm looking at a 10" sub, so not quite the same as you, but the general shape should be the same.

Does the size of sub dictate the size and shape of the enclosure?
If so, what are the rules/guidelines for this?
Does the type of music you want to play have a bearing on the shape/size too?
If you manage to get some radical design that makes the most of your kit, let me have a peek please?!
Cheers,
Marko

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Making Sub Enclosures

generally the sub will come with a leaflet giving you the basic information. There are 3 types of box, enclosed, ported and bandbass. Each get a different sound and should have a different volume. all should be explained in the leaflet.

The way i look at it, an 8' x 4' sheet of 3/4" MDF from B&Q is around a tenner and they will cut it upto 4 times for free so you can get it in the car. At that price why not just have a go. you can build a simple box in a few hours and you don't have to carpet it until your happy with it!

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Making Sub Enclosures

Go to a timber merchants, get some wood, buy some wood tacks,(long enough to go throught the wood) then design and make your box but tack it before you glue it then if it does go wrong you can easily take it apart

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Making Sub Enclosures

your better off screwing it. Make sure you drill a pilot hole or you will split the wood. Nails arn't really suitable, they will not have much hold and are likely to split the wood. If you do use nails give them a tap on the end first with the hammer to blunt them a bit, it will make them less likely to spllit the wood ;)

Alan that was meant before he finishes the product so he can see what it looks like then if it aint right he can dismantle it leaving only little holes instead of screw holes

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Making Sub Enclosures

even as a trial i'd still use screws, i don't like tacks for this type of work :)
