...how something like this could happen on this exact bend. The bend (shown here in StreetView) in question is so short and tight that you can only drive through it at about 30-35mph.

Something tells me someone has been cutting corners, and I HATE people who cut corners without knowing what's on the otherside. :bang:

It's not fair to speculate, but I suspect that one or both of the cars over cooked it going into the bend or cut the corner. That said a blow out or mechanical failure could also be to blame. As could the weather, both cars having pants wipers could easily have put them head on at any point before during or after the chicane.

It's a pretty easy corner to negotiate without plowing headfirst into someone, just stay on your side of the road, it's not rocket science...

aparently there are lots of crashed at that spot.

One time a Haulage Express wagon came round that corner heading towards ASDA, and tipped over just on the exit. IIRC he went too fast for the corner and either clipped the kerb and toppled or toppled due to the speed.

There were lots and lots and lots of free biscuits lying all over the place though :D

People feel the car slip slightly and panic. Panic braking followed by overcorrection throws them off the road on the same side as they had been turning - I mean on a RH bend they hit the ditch a bit further down on the RHS. In those cases tyre grip wasnt a problem or they would have ploughed straight ahead.

If people were taught how to drive their cars and not panic brake every time things get a bit outside their normal drive we would all be a lot safer.

Im with whitesei
How you tackle the corners is one thing
What todo when something goes wrong is another

Knowing What your car is like - Be aware of the signs of it loosing grip

for example No Abs = Lock up brakes
I know in my mind if i wanna keep control - i've got to start pumping my Pedal as i'm breaking - giving chance for the car to slow, but to hopefully not lock my wheels up
Should i start hearing a Faint Scrubbing noise - i know my car is on the verge of grip
IE understeer is just around the corner (pardon the pun)
So knowing that i slighy application of brakes and finding where the tyres are gripping is a better option

People dont prepare for situations, find out what your car does - and think logically what you can do to prevent it doing it in the future

There is a place called Lower Loxeley (the same as a well known radio soap) with a medium RH bend followed by a narrower stone bridge. Umpteen times a year some to$$er takes out the bridge on the RHS so its down to 1 lane with lights. I have taken the bend at more than 70 and yes the car was near the limit but it went around without drama. If any of those crashed cars had been doing anywhere near that speed there would have been deaths and calls for permanently closing the road. So those crashes have to be driver incompetence.

On the same road I had an idiot barge past me on a blind hill at the end of a long straight where he previously chose not to overtake. He was p'd off because my little 40bhp Seicento was driven more quickly than he could drive his 150bhp GTI. Hopefully his is one of the cars in the drink though I wish no ill on his person.
