maf sensor

Hello All,

Today I cleaned my old MAF. Removed the good one and tried out the old cleaned one. I was glad to see that the new one (which has already 30.000 km) is still clean. The old one still shows the same problem. However, it is not as bad as I remember, so i think that the cleaning improved the MAF performance (it was totally black inside). I think the moral is the following: it the MAF is damaged, cleaning won't do any good. If it is just durty, it might help doing a nice cleaning.

Cheers,
Afonso

I clean my MAF every 3/4 months - no problems with it what so ewer :)

Hi Sven,

And do you notice any performance improvement when you clean it? After those 3/4 months?

I feel my Bravo is not pushing the way it could. My brother has a Lybra 1.9 JTD and it pulls a lot more than my Bravo. Sure it was 115 cv (10 more than the Bravo) but is heavier and the gearbox is longer (lower revs for the same speed).

@Afonso - yes I do every time, it make the “pulling“ eaven and the car starts to need less petrol. The same stuff I do on my mates 156 and no problems.

But like stated above - it wont help if the MAF is broken compleatly.

Thanks Sven,

I feel tempted to do it on my Bravo (it is two years old already) but it look clean. I am a bit afraid of damaging it. But on the other hand, my bro Lybra pulls as a wild horse compared to my JTD...

And the other thing is, I supposed this can be also thought as maintenance procedure. Would you say that this could encrease the life of the MAF?
Thanks in advance!

The MAF usualy goes due to oil on it- so yes you extend its life.

The secont thing that can be the power loss is the EGR valve, it may be open and letting the turbo preasure in the exhaust.

Hello Sven,

I see your point. I'll might trying cleaning the EGR valve first. I downloaded your tutorial (thank you for your generosity) and see if I can do it. You know, I am just a car driver so I wonder if I am skilled enough to do it.

I keep you posted on any evolution.

Thank you again

Hi Sven,

Hold on a minute. if the EGR is faulty, shouldn't that lead to an erratic idling behaviour only and not loss of power?

And how could the turbo pressure is lost with a dodgy EGR valve?

I am sorry for my ignorance and thank you in advance for your advice.

Cheers,

Afonso

@Alfonso - the EGR is directly connected from the inlet manifold to the exhaust manifold. In other words when its open it picks up exhaust fumes and deliveres them to the inletmanifold (mixes it with sucked air) so if its open all the time, a portion of the turbo preasure is directly guided to the exhaust.

The iratic behaviour can be because of it, but dont think so, a diagnostic check will tell you how wide (if) the EGR is always open. It should be 0%, mine was 3% and was killing my performance, so I blocked it.

I see your point... thanks...

My car has not an erratic idling. But it was 95.000km and the EGR has never been touched yet.

Hello again,

Back to this issue of over/underpower. I heard that there is a preassure sensor that can be tricked and hence allowing much higher performances. Any hint or idea? Do you know where it is located? Anybody has the hiring circuit?
Thank you,
Afonso

Hi Sven,

Yes, I suppose it is that - the turbo sensor.

Cheers,

Afonso

Ok,

Thanks a lot for the advice. I haven't touch my Bravo yet... my BMW F650GS is receiving all my (little) attention. Can you imagine, with 9700 km and needs new brake pads?!

Hi all and Sven,

Some monthes have passed and finally I cleaned the EGR valve taking the Sven "bible" as reference. Indeed I could not make it as shining as Sven did but I think it was reasonably clean. The power improvement was small but it doesn't smoke as it used to. Thank you Sven for you help but I still have the same question: why does not my Bravo pulls the way it did when it was new? MAF is ok...

Suggestions are really welcome.

Cheers,

Afonso

Hi Sven

Thank you for your advise. I will do it probably as soon as possible and will let you know :)

Cheers!

Afonso
