Stil looking for a new car and only thing putting me off the multijet is the m32 box. Is there another 6 speed box that can be fitted to the 1.9 multijet without major grief?

Cheers

Ben

Not that I'm aware of unfortunately. However don't let the M32 be the nail in the coffin - it's such a well known problem that many mechanics actually specialise in it these days, e.g. WG Motorworks in Kent and Halifax Gearbox and Clutch Centre, the latter of which I believe will do the bearings for just £350 in a couple of hours.

And for extending lifespan, change the gearbox oil every service or two with some good high grade stuff (Fuchs Titan Sintofluid 75w80 is the most popular choice), and don't labour 6th gear at low speed - the M32's not such a problem as it's made out to be :) *

*definitely not in denial being an M32 owner, I swear!!

You could try researching how much grief is involved in putting in the F40 gearbox from the 1.9CDTI Vectra C

Did fiat ever sort this gearbox out or does it affect all GPS regardless of age

This is not a Fiat gearbox, it's made by Getrag at Opel's request.

New gearbox mount, Driveshafts, and Gear linkages required apparently. However, The F40 box is bigger/longer, which is why it wasn't fitted in the GP, or the GM Astra/Zafira as there isn't enough room, but fits fine in the bigger Vectra engine bay. Also a mention of different clutch/flywheel, but not sure about that.

Gearbox mounts, driveshafts and gear linkages are a given when swapping a gearbox but I don't think that shorter driveshafts for the F40 that work on the GP even exist IF you could somehow make it fit in the engine bay.

:idea:Ben D, why don't you go for the SeleSpeed? (I'm joking, please don't do that)

Nothing from the Stilo or c630 or c635 fit?

Cheers

Tbh with the hassle involved I'd personally say you'd be better off to just have the M32 bearings replaced once or at most twice over the lifetime of the car. They make enough telltale signs when they're about to go, so it's not like it's going to sneak up on you.

One thing that does seem to have been changed on the M32 'box is the oil quantity. I'm a Croma owner, not GP but it also has the M32. The owners manual says 1.8l while eLearn says 2.2l (2.4l if box is dissasembled, so must have 200ml undrainable). This is confirmed by research on the M32 in Vauxhall/Opel cars. I also think this is why the plug on the side that looks like it should be a level hole, is below the full level so can't be used.
I wonder if garages are using the correct quantity of oil? Anybody know what Autodata says?

AutoData says 2.1 litres 75W85 Synthetic GL-4

I've considered swapping my 5 speed gearbox to the 6 speed on my 1.3 90bhp since the engine was turning 2900rpm at 130kph so it was a bit noisy but after doing a bit of research on the M32 I thought I'd better stick with what I have.

The M32 'box seems to handle the 2.5 tons and 150 HP of the Croma (mine is at 110,000 miles) without significant issues. The Croma is a small sample, but if it was a torque or HP limitation issue they would have more failures than the smaller cars. This makes it sound like a more random issue perhaps related to oil level, adverse combination of tolerances or quality issues. Thre are huge numbers of these gearboxes out there in several car brands. If there was a fundamental issue with them they would not hve been used for so long. This article from WG seems to support this.

They are specialists and say they do about 100 a year so it's not like every M32 is failing. Because you can't check the level I'd suggest a oil change at 75,000 miles, at the first sign of unusual noise or if there are signs of leakage.

That's interesting, I'm not sure if the gearbox oil has ever been changed on mine so I'll mention it next time it goes in for a service. I'm also not an M32 owner in denial (whisper, 7 years old, 80k and ok so far, touch wood, fingers-crossed etc, etc)

Does anyone know of mechanics in Scotland specialising in these? Just out of curiosity you understand and I'm not in any way paranoid and thinking ahead :D

In answer to my own question, found one through another forum in East Lothian just in case anyone in Scotland is looking. Still hoping I won't need his services though
