General Luggage rack

Just bought and installed a luggage rack for the 500 L. It seemed like a good deal and should come in handy for the picnic basket. Ignore the oil drips on the asphalt, that's another project for the near future.

No, it fits on the existing holes for the license plate and just hangs up top. I did put some padding on the hangers so the paint did not wear away.

Looking good, I like the wood. I picked mine up in Sicily, first car I brought over had it stolen between Palermo and Portbury whist being shipped over, even though it was secured to the car! Didn't risk it with this car so brought it over inside my luggage! ( wrong way round I hear you all shout). These are a great buy over there at only 60Euros!

Well, at least you still have your original plates. Since I am bringing it to the states, Italy made be de-register the car from their system. That means the original plates from 1969 and the original libretto circolare were taken from me amd destroyed.

It's a real shame, they don't look the same without Italian plates! Unfortunately I am waiting my English plates, but will still keep the originals.

I am getting slightly envious of all these 500's that are in one piece and on the road. Luggage racks look great!
All I need now is an engine lid to put one on LOL.

I like the luggage racks too. But can't help feeling that they're a bit small. Proportionally, it could do with a larger picnic hamper on the back to carry all the bottles of Chianti.

Does anyone have one that actually serves a purpose?
I have always thought they were just a cosmetic adornment for poseurs...and perhaps that's what they are. But i have agreed with Patinated Sheila that we will explore Scotland together a bit more this Spring and Summer, so I may need more space to carry things when we are camping.
It looks like the rack can hardly carry anything because I guess that there's a weight restriction and you don't want to obscure the vents.
Does it damage the paintwork?
What type have you fitted?
Ta if you can answer or have an opinion that can help me..

You might be lucky enough to squeeze a brief case on there!!!! And I would imagine it would have to be a very, very small ️ for little people, maybe about the size of an action man. I am not being very helpful am I????

Roof rack and some rally stripes, you’ve got the driving lights already and it will cover up your chequered sunroof.

That was actually very helpful. Anything that affects my performance-enhancing sunroof is not a good idea.

I found that Autobella on eBay have a good image of one and it's really just a shelf. But it might come in handy for holding the tent or drying a soggy pullover.

I think this old chestnut might have to be the solution after all.

This one has quite a big suitcase on it but as you stated previously air vents and air intakes are all a bit covered?

I would be looking in the mirror all the time to see if it’s ended up in the middle of the road with the engine lid attached to it!!!!!!

EI had to put mine on Historic plates because I bought it without any paperwork , they look like the old English ones i.e Letter(H) 4 numbers &3 letters. I wanted the small Italian type and was told by the very old and stubbornly shop owner that I have to have the "standard ones as per Government guidelines" they look massive on my baby . After he'd made them he said "well if YOU want to put them( italian ones) on that's up to you. I could risk a fine by doing so.

I think if only two people are travelling there is enough space in the back. On the other hand they look cool so maybe you can put something small and light there.

I've been looking for a bike rack solution. Do you feel that your roof bars are stable/secure? What make are they? Where did you purchase them?
