Technical LPG Conversion

Technical LPG Conversion

I thought about it, then cancelled the idea:

a) Uno is not long enough to allow using the tank that fits instead of the spare wheel - the rules setting the deformation zone cannot be met.
b) Standard cylindrical tank in the trunk would occupy far too much room and the car would become impractical for anything but basic transport of persons.

However, as my car is equipped with carburettor, the simplest and cheapest LPG conversion kit would do. Those for SPI/cat cars are about twice the price of these basic models and I am unclear about the approval procedures for catted cars where you live.

Other than this, there is nothing to stop you from doing the conversion - a member of local forum reported running a Fire engine on LPG for 100k+ km without any problems.

Also the economics aren't good - basically, the Uno is not worth enough to make the conversion worthwhile over the remainder of the car's life... AND the fuel economy of all Uno models is relatively good, so you would have to do mega-miles to save much anyway.

Let's say for argument's sake that the conversion would cost a thousand pounds. The Uno is perhaps worth 300 pounds, and a thousand pounds would be sufficient petrol for at least a year of normal driving. Assuming a running cost saving of 33%, that means it would take three years to recoup the installation cost, if you currently spend a thousand pounds a year on petrol... and you probably don't :) And, most Uno owners seem to struggle to keep the Uno more than three years! ;)

If you are to convert to LPG there are the positives and the negatives, but you would need to inform your insurance company as well, send in the certificate as proof of conversion,. This has no affect on your premiums just they need to be made aware of it

I agree with alex, uno's are well cheap to run so it really wont be worth it, the kit alone would cost more than the value of the car it's on...
How ever it could be done if you used the boot space for the tank, a friend of mine had a vauxhall astra 1.4 heap of crap but this had lpg and went for miles and miles on twenty quids worth of gas.
You cant start it on gas and you can only switch the gas on when the engine is warm. so if you only do short trips then it's no good for you ne how...:slayer:

hello,

we did it with my uno 1.1 1985 dubb carb and i drove about it about 90000kms over three years... now he is to rusted.
now i am running GPL in my turbo and it works nice (not VERy well, but nice, but probably my UT needs a good maintenance, there are faults in the engine bay that i couldn't find... )
i am doiing a electronic installation on the turbo and i drove 200km/h, then i stopped.
we got a special fuel tank in place of the reserve wheel so, dont lose space in the trunk, its 50l tank.
sorry for my bad english

fuel consumption with the carb was 13l but i was young and un responsible (drove one time 170-180 YES!) and i was always first at the trffic lights...
now the turbo drives in normal conditions 11liter for 100km, when i watch the pedal carefully, 10liters/100km and when i drag BMW and other **** i drive it 13 and one time 14liters for 100kms...

regards, joris

Interesting! Yes, that "too rusted" problem is familar to many of us :)

LOL... ;)

I think your English is pretty good and certainly not 'bad' - but I don't quite understand the above sentence ;) Do you mean that the engine stopped after you were driving at full speed (200km/h)? Was this driving on LPG? Ah I think I see... the LPG is put in by electronic injection?

That is very interesting. That fuel consumption is still less than for my FIAT Stilo Abarth, so I am impressed. I had never heard of a turbocharged engine converted to run on LPG before.

Thanks,
-Alex
