Oh dear. I seem to remember one of those when I fixed my alternator not long ago (I have the same van as you). I can tell you that the pulley is on a spring-loaded arm (to tension the belt), and that it has some sort of bearing in the middle, and that you can lever it up and down to take the tension off the belt by putting a socket and lever on the centre nut and hoicking it. If your thing's dropped off (!) then you might need some other way of moving the tensioning arm.

I would be inclined to have a careful look with plenty of light from underneath, and from above (looking down from the LHS of the engine bay) and possibly removing the dirt and muck shield from inside the wing, which is held on with screws, or maybe cable ties or some other substiturte as these have been about a bit.
