You can get a new key (not sure on price) and it can be re-programmed to your car, again not sure on price for that.

Someone with a better idea will come a long shortly.

I dealer only job and expensive to boot I'd think although should only need a another programmed key

Personally I'd have a damned good look for the keys and check out what your insurance covers (house & car) :)

Ive been quoted an extortionate £549.40 +VAT for a new lock set.

My nearest fiat dealer checked and said i'd need to replace the lock set?

Is this right, surely a blank key can be coded to my car and would cost a lot less???

Yes it can. Don't worry you don't need new locks. But as Arg said, I would search high & low to find this key before you make any decision.

Do you have the code for the keys? You could contact the dealer to order one using the code. I'm sure it would cost a lot less.

I tried ensuring my keys but it would cost me an extra 120E per year and I would have to lose both to count. I said forget about it.

You've been quoted a fortune if you think of how much the car is worth in the UK. Although we have much lower salaries, I still think it's a reasonable price here. The market is much higher in Romania, the country where everything is possible. My car is evaluated at 5500E and wouldn't cost more than 1500 for sure in the UK.

Prices are very high, check the cost of a headlamp :) +VAT!

You need basically:

  • New physical keys which fit the locks.
  • and also programmed to be accepted by vehicle security

You can use FiatECUScan (registered version) to program new remotes.

....but of course if you don't have any keys that physically fit the car then that's a non starter.

Key is ordered from dealer using VIN and will take 5 days plus. If its a remote key approx £130.
You then need to have the key cut and programmed to the car using the keycut and electronic codes also bought from dealer.
Usually cheaper to call an autolocksmith as he can come to you rather than you having the car transported to the dealer.

Alternativly, if you want to do some of the work yourself (cheaper) give me a call tomorrow. This would mean sending me some bits from the car.
3 to 5 day turnaround.

i lost my remote key, it was £130ish for key, then a price for cutting, a price for retrieving the code from where its kept, cost of pairing the key to the car, then labour. remember saving £300ish for mine, then it turned up the day after i booked it in! was able to cancel my booking

keep looking, or check insurances

I see many fiat stilo keys on Ebay. But they keep mentioning I would need to switch the "blade" to fit my car.

what does that mean?

The blade is the metal part that springs out of the key and goes into the lock or ignition switch barrel.

Problem with getting secondhand key is that I don't think it's possible to reprogram the immobiliser transponder. I believe Fiat Examiner and FiatECUScan can only reprogram the remote control part of the key.

ponsaloti may know different to this.

I bought one from eBay but only for the blue cover. I swapped everything, including the transponder, from my old worn cover into the new one.

The transponder is in a small glass capsule and on some keys is glued in which makes it very difficult to get out without breaking it.

Not having a dig at anyone, it's just the ebay thing drives me nuts.

We get a lot of customers coming into our shop with keys bought from ebay. Most are crap and some customers will stand infront of me and tell me I'm wrong because the person they bought it from says its good and all I have to do is bla, bla, bla.

I'm gonna get off me soapbox now:)

I was quoted £199 for a new remote key fob, provided I already have the code for the car, which I do. I need to get a new one for my son as he is now driving it too. How do you go about doing this yourself for cheaper?
