Technical Loss of Power or Acceleration (EGR stuck open?)

Help. I have a Fiat Stilo 1.9 jtd Dynamic. It has developed a little (I hope little) problem. Whilst driving along the car loses all of it's acceleration. It just slows and you can put you foot flat to the floor and nothing!!!!

If you drop it to the lower gear it starts accelerating again, albeit a little jerky because of the lower gear. Originally it was only in 3rd gear and then dropping to 2nd to get it back on track, but today it is happening in 2nd. If I take it out of gear and put it back in, it picks up again.

The electrics don't go off, the car doesn't stall, no warning lights show up, just this loss of power.

Any ideas ..... please don't say it is going to cost lots of money. It's getting a little worrying all these tales about Stilos.

Unplug your MAF sensor and then try it.

I have just had this exact problem (fixed 11-09-07), it was the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve) part is about £100 from fiat plus fitting & plus diagnosing cost, so prob about £250 at fiat i recon.

I took mine to a diesel specialist's who disable it for me (apparently its not really required and they do it to loads of diesel when it goes) all the part does is cool the exhaust gas down to remove the NOx (nitrous oxide).

These guys charged me £163 inc VAT that was for the Diagnosis, hours labour and the disabling of the part.

A lot of people put these simptoms down to the overboost valve located under the passenger headlight as there very similar simptoms.

When I dropped a gear or revved it I got a puff black smoke out the exhaust, if you have this I would def say its the EGR.

I hope you're not saying you've had this part disabled (kept shut)

Apart from the effect on emissions I think your find fuel economy will suffer at the lower end (low speed & low revs) which is where the EGR valve normally operates.

The EGR valve does not cool exhaust gas to reduce nox, it reduces COMBUSTION temperature in the cylinder, so by disabling an egr valve and keeping it blocked off the temperature in the cylinder is raised and could cause premature failure.
