Technical Loss od turbo power

Hi. Still have on going issue with 2.0 JTD lack of power. I've (slowly) been changing suggested items. Have so far replaced intercooler (did have a leak due to stone damage), replaced MAF and MAP sensors, checked pipes for leaks, etc. but the problem persists.

I basically have no turbo. However when the engine is warm I get turbo occasionally for around 2-3 seconds with a bit of black smoke then it cuts out again until it comes in again some time later for another few seconds. The engine management light isn't on.

If anyone has got any ideas? I'm in France and trying to find someone interested in sorting this out seems to be difficult. The local Fiat garage has had a look and have suggested that it is the central engine management unit and I should replace it for 1000 euros. I actually don't think they have a clue what the problem is.

Hi m8 I had this on my 2000 jtd on the side of the turbo there's a pipe about the same size as a fuel pipe but its actually a vaccume pipe the thing it goes to is bolted on with two 8mm bolts. I think its called a wastegate valve . Its a swine to get at but can b done without taking turbo off. When I changed this the turbo started working perfectly. I'm no mechanic so cannot guarantee this is the problem on yours .might b worth a shot though. Good luck hope this helps.

Might even be a hole in the pipe? Or try shorting out the two wires to simulate "switch on" and turbo should be in all the time, if not then it could be the switch-or summit else?

I have had to replace the wastegate actuator as well. It can be tested using a hand vacuum pump. Disconnect the small hose from the soleniod valve and see if the hose to the actuator holds a vacuum. If not then the hose or the actuator diagphram is holed. To determine if it is the hose or the actuator you need to get under the engine and connect the vacuum pump directly to the actuator and pump it to see if it moves the actuator arm and it stays in position until the vacuum is removed.
You can also check that the soleniod valve opens to put vacuum to the hose before you start crawling (like I did) under the engine. Better if you can get access to a vehicle hoist.
