The engine management is quite sensitive to the cam/crank correlation not being right. If the dealer has set the timing without the official tools (it happens even at main dealers because marking up the pulleys is a lot quicker) then there's some scope for errors being thrown. My money would be on going back to basics with the official setting tools....Member @puntodeltathema has some experience in a 500 with poor timing
Flashing engine management light is a classic sign of Phonic Wheel Relean that needs to be executed. This happened when I changed the belt myself in October so under the same circumstances. Soon as you turn the engine off and restart if goes back to normal. Over 3500 RPM it’s generally triggered. It literally takes a few mins do with the OBD software. Very poor really that it wasn’t picked up by the dealer. Get yourself a registered version of Fiat Multiscan off internet with some leads and do it yourself. Saves the hassle.Took the 500 out for its first drive since got it back from dealer following Coil replacement (combination of a being a second car and crap weather last few weeks) - car starts and runs fine, got it on a quite A road and up to 80+ without any issue and when it was back down to 60-65, the Stop Start Disconnect warning light came on, engine management light was flashing and started to misfire and lose power.
Managed to pull into a farm shop car park and car was running very rough and misfiring. Turned engine off and back on, and car appears fine - revs and runs as expected without any warning lights
This is what happened originally, which prompted the original post and trip to dealer.
So its booked in again but any suggestions - just wondering why the stop start disconnect warning light comes on and then the engine management light/rough running/misfire ? On this model you can switch stop start off and it stay off - which we do.
Will update you once dealer looked - they checked timing belt/timing last time (it had just been replaced) and the diagnostics pointed them to the coil pack, which they replaced. Clearly not that (or a duff replacement) !
Thanks
P01361 I can’t find but P1361 is an Intermittent crank sensor
We don’t have cam too far advanced or retarded errors codes
@field500 can you confirm which engine. I have been assuming a 1.2 with the mention of belt
Some codes are model depend
Something obviously went wrong during the belt change that’s for sure.
Timing error I am sitting on the fence. It’s the most likely but doesn’t fit with the reported error codes.
HiStill sounds like a problem with the belt change. Fine before the change and failed first drive after
Surprising how often even dealerships get it wrong
Better if we had the full codes
VVT advances more the higher the revs. If it’s slightly out you normal get a cam correlation error
Fingers crossed it’s soon sorted
HiHope there’s a happy out come
Sorry to hear it’s not fixed yetHi
Well, no definitive outcome yet - car went in Monday evening and they still have it. They have got FIAT Technical on the case with it now - they have redone the belt /tensioner/swapped out plugs/ leads, fuel injectors and they have been going out in the car with one technician driving and the other monitoring the laptop plugged into the diagnostics - they can get the car to fault - any speed over 70 basically, but varies between 71 and "early 80's". Codes not showing them anything different after all the work. i.e same cylinder 1/4 misfire etc
They are now going to fit a new Variator - apparently the Variator on this year engine (late 2017 1.2 8v) "can not fail" (words of FIAT Technical) but begs the question as to why you can get a replacement !
In any case, service manager is not convinced but is hopeful - they have said if it is still showing faults, they will get FIAT Technical back in - they have tried all their ideas and their own.
So would a faulty variator cause the issue? Will let you know tomorrow.................
Good news is at least i am not being charged for any of this work - i assume they putting it down to the belt change. The dealer has been great so far with this one.
Dont know, probably not - albeit they seem to have tried everything else !Odd question have yhey done a compression test?
I have also read that any issue with the Engine Management will trip the Stop Start disconnect warning, so i think that may not be the cause..........
Hi
Think we have success - after much investigation and work by the dealer, the replacement of the variator seems to have fixed the issue. They have certainly been road testing it - done over 100 miles, which of course is not an issue. Three test runs today and I was asked to collect it - as the trip home is mainly 30/40 made a detour and did 15 miles up and down to the next junction on the motorway - 85-90 no issue, car runs lovely.
So I hope that's it - will see how it goes over the next few weeks, albeit the wife never goes over 60 on her commute.
No charge by the dealer so I assume they think changing the belt/tensioner has impacted on the Variator etc.
Thanks for all your input and suggestions !
