Hi all...

Just a quicky...

Due to the new insurance rules, people who are selling cars seem to remove their insurance off the car, and then send the tax back to declair the vehicle sorn...

This creates a problem for us buyers...

If the car was local, i could insure it straight away, sign the log book & wait for my certificate to arrive to tax before driving... However, a car im looking at is located approx 160 miles away...

I have done this before, using the legal loop hole of booking an MOT. If you dont know this, you basically insure the car & book in the vehicle for an MOT at a station close to home. When its back, you can then cancel the MOT...

This means you can use the vehicle on the road without tax, due to you travelling to an MOT test station... Althought not strictly honest.

However this car has 10 months MOT on it, and i doubt i could use that as an excuse... The other option is to straight bar it, but im not willing to do that for 160miles :(

Any ideas how you lot do this? and would it matter if i was to book an early test.. 10 months early,, due to losing the MOT slip & not knowing how long it had left lol *wink wink*...

I didnt think post offices accepted printed copies of insurance? Thought it had to be one direct from the insurance company?

Ah... I know the last insurance company i used for my mk2 fez wouldnt email or fax me a copy of the original, i had to wait....

Is there any way i can find out if an online version is available prior to getting the insurance?

Also need to find an office open over the festive period lol

The other problem is... as i found out by the yellow one i seen a week or two ago... is insuring it prior to buying...

I cant insure the car when i get there as i have no access to a computer & printer.. plus the time searching for online quotes etc....

The only option i have is to insure a car prior to viewing it... However i cant tax on day insurance, id have to take a full policy out.. which will then cause me expense & effort if the car turns out to be a nail like the last one i viewed...

Its diff if it has tax as you can arrange the insurance prior, and just ring up to take the policy out with a ref number, after viewing... However without the tax, i need to get onto emails, get the cert, print it out etc...

However, you can tax on a week or 2 weeks policy. I'll done it. Why not phone your existing company, they usually let you insure another car for like 2 weeks or so.

The simple option is to tell the seller that you won't take the car without 6 months tax, let them sort it out. Even if you pay extra for the tax it is much easier for them than it is for you!

I have van insurance, and they wont allow a car on my commercial/business policy... Its crap, so i normally have to take out a seperate policy.

Ive asked them to do this, but they came back with 'we have our insurance on another vehicle now'.... I dont mind paying for it... grr lol

Wish i had a trader policy!!

Get them to sell you the car through ebay. I bought my Sei through ebay and got 2 weeks free insurance. Had no intention of keeping the insurance on but it gave me time to sort out a good deal.
Don't know if ebay still do that or not but worth a look. They could do a buy it now for £50 or so to avoid charges, just make sure you buy it before someone else does, lol.

sounds very dodgy now days ring the DVLA for info Swinton and Admeral email you there certs (at request) on a PDF with all letter marks on but good luck finding a post office open xmas eve :p

another way would be to view, pay a deposit signed and dated whitesed etc to secure the car, insure it, then pick it up at a later date no V5 signed over until cash/cheque paypal etc are cleared

Yea thats the issue... I think i may have managed to get him to sort it his end which would be handy... My mrs will be insuring it as she has just sold her VW... and using it to tie her over until she finds a decent motor in jan...

Fingers crossed.. Although i think this insruance & tax thing a bit stupid for people who want to be legal...
