General  leaky rad

General  leaky rad

on classis cars when a new rad is not available, they can stick a new copper/brass or aluminum core on. as long as the other parts are in usable condition the core can be easily changed.

this is often a cheaper alternative than buying a new radiator, although rads are so cheap that if a new one is available then its recommended that you buy it. however as hellcat says, if you recore your old rad you can choose between a copper/brass core or an aluminium core, and a copper/brass core will be better at cooling. buying annew copper/brass rad will cost more because they are generally only an upgrade or performnce option (unless standard rad is copper/brass on that type of car), and as well all know you pay a premium for any kind of upgraded parts.

the core is just the fins with pipes going through them, and the most common part to leak or corrode or get blocked up.

it took me a while, but i found a nice link where they have a photo guide of making a core. (y)

A recore will often be better than a repalcement. You can pay a little bit more and get really good one. I have to say that the OE rad in my 1.8 is pretty good though. Its quite hard to get the fan to cut in.
