Afternoon all. After chasing my Multijet's propensity to emit huge plumes of smoke, I reckon (OK, my Man does, but I agree with him...) that it must be injector-related. I'm certain I have at least one leaky one (because smell) and my smoky exhaust's getting worse.

Any indication of what a remove & recon injectors x4, refit & (presumably) a de-coke of the top of the engine might cost?

Has a leak off test been done to establish which injector(s) is/are leaky? Reconditioned injectors will be around £80-85 each. Lifting the head will expensive and I am not sure there will be any great benefit from a decoke.

Have the DPF, EGR and turbo been checked? These could possibly be culprits as well...

No not yet - there's a local specialist who will be doing some proper diagnostics as I don't want to pour good money after bad. I suspect it will be painfully obvious once the top of the engine is exposed though.

Decoke? No not as you mean it - I meant cleaning up the black death on top of the engine which a leaky injector causes. I'm going nowhere near opening up t'engine!

I'd priced up recon injectors, I was looking for an indication of how difficult and involved their replacement was, and any £idea of the likely bill as a result? I'm thinking I'll get no change for about £500 - but that's guessing not knowing?

Cost will depend purely on time as labour is the biggest cost. I can't see many garages spending a lot of time cleaning up the cam cover so figure £340 ish for the injectors and at a guess 3-4 hours work so anywhere from £250-400. The injectors will have to be exchanged so either you pay the deposit up front and claim it back once the reconditioning company receive the old ones or you will have to wait while the originals are sent away. Deposit will likely be £120 ish.

Update - the Man just called. Injector specialists have said that seals are leaking on two injectors, one very seriously, but that all injectors are within tolerance, so they will be re-sealed and everything will be bolted back together, and all should be well.

Still 4-500 squids he estimates, but much better than it could have been, because these Bosch units can't be reconditioned diesel guy says, so it would have been new ones at c£200ish each.
