There was a post a while back and the topic went a bit off subject (as usual..lol) and someone mentioned the speedo inacurracy...

Was just thinking (as i do, once in a while), if you stick larger wheels on, arnt you going faster than the speedo suggests?

No the larger the wheels, the greater the friction between u and the road thus u will be going slower im afraid

Re: Re: Re: Larger wheels and the effect on the speedo...?

if the curcumference of the tyre is bigger, then surely you would be going faster?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Larger wheels and the effect on the speedo...?

Sort of right. If the current circumference is bigger than standard you will actually be travelling faster than what your speedo reads out.

It doesn't mean it makes your car go faster. As Mike says, it will probably make your car slower than it was but your speedo will read out slower than you are actually going.

Do I make sense? I know what I mean, lol

Now that it's been answered time to take it off topic LOL ;)

The other common misconception about larger wheels is that putting wider wheels/tyres on will increase your grip... simply Not True ! Grip will be the same :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Larger wheels and the effect on the speedo...?

Not quite true...lol

The amount of rubber that touches the road is the same...

But you do get a marginal increase of grip due to the cooling of the tyres...

On narrow tyres the grip pattern is front to back, so there is more circumference on the road....with wider tyres the grip is side to side so there is less circumference of the tyre on the road, so the tyre has more time to cool itself...

This is why low profile tyres can be abismal in the wet and very cold conditions...
