Laptops just developed this random urge to turn off now and again. Doesn't seem to be anything that triggers it, sometimes it will be loading MS and turn off, other ties it will be turn off after running fine for hours on end. Have cleared spyware and the like off it, made bugger all difference. Don't fancy wiping the hard drive for the 10th or so time :(
Any ideas?

Cheers,
Gaz

The problem with the laptop could be due to lots of reasons. e.g a virus or a hardware error. In this case im guessing its cutting off due to overheating. If there is no warning what so ever and it just cuts off and doesnt shut down, its probably because the cpu is getting to hot and when they reach a certain temperature they cut off to save them selves becoming damaged. i would open it up and turn it on and check to see if the fan on the processor is working or not, if the fan is not working you know this is your problem.

Fan's working, hear it all the time.

suggesting it is overheating.

if you dont have the laptop sat on a hard flat surface the fan cant suck air in.
if the intake vent is blocked it will restrict airflow.
if the heatsink fins are blocked it will reduce heat exchange to air.

sounds like it need a cooling system service (hoover)

Hasn't done it for a while, but took the hoover to the back just in case :)
Can't keep it on a flat hard surface, or I would have a desktop ;) but trying to let air flow around it as much as possible.

I fixed one with the same prob the other day. Sounds like overheating.

Take the plastic stip off below the screen with the power button on. Then under that will be the screws holding the keyboard on. Undo them and flip the keyboard over. You should have the heatsink staring you i in the face. Take the small screws off and you can take the top of the heatink off (not the whole thing out as you will need thermal paste to put it back on) Then theres probably a line of dust next to the fan where the grills of the heatsink start. Clean it out and put it back together.

Hope this helps. Theres loads of tutorials on how to open laptops on the net. Or if u need anymore help just ask :slayer:
