Technical Koni FSD rear shock rattle.. Shock!

I had just Esseesse Koni kit fitted and before that I was already aware with Koni's knocking issue and bolts solution to this knocking problem.

Finding typical M10x1.25x65 / 10,9 class and M12x1.25x95 / 8,8 class bolts is easy. However all of them have the part which is between bolt's head and their thread too thin which leads later to Koni knocking. This was 9 mm diameter in case of M10x1.25x65 bolt and 11 mm diameter in case of M12x1.25x95 and should be 10 mm and 12 mm diameter accordingly.

As I failed in proper bolts searching, in the end I had to have them custom made. M10x1.25x65 / 10,9 class bolts were made with 10 mm diameter and M12x1.25x95 / 8,8 class bolts were made with 12 mm diameter. Total cost was about 50 € with postage. Bolts are made of tempered steel and additionally galvanized. I reckon that they are better quality than OE one.

Before Koni fitting (out of curiosity) I put both custom made and OE bolts through shock's joints. With custom made there was almost no movement at all, as with OE one there was significant up and down movement. This 1 mm in diameter makes a difference :)

Hi Gregi, excellent, please can you tell us the supplier details? Thanks.

Hi Gregi, excellent, please can you tell us the supplier details? Thanks.
This is Polish company, placed in Radom: www.srubstal.com.pl They make almost all kinds of bolts. Unfortunately their website is only in Polish. I will ask them tomorrow for contact person who speaks English as same as UK shipping possibilities.

Hands up for a set !!

I would be very keen for a set .......... even though shipping to Australia is rarely cheap

Your assistance and efforts Gregi is much appreciated

You can contact them directly under: [email protected] They also speak English and realize international orders :)

Please mention in your correspondence/order the following:
1) ABARTH 500 / FIAT 500

2) ŚRUBA M 10 X 1,25 X 65 KL. 10.9 WG SZKICU OC

3) ŚRUBA M 12 X 1,25 X 95 KL. 8.8 WG SZKICU OC

4) PODKŁADKA 10,4 X 22 X 5 WG SZKICU OC

5) PODKŁADKA 12,4 X 22 X 3 WG SZKICU OC

6) fiatforum.com

Basing on above they will be able to recognize my former order and replicate it. My bolts were made of stainless steel and galvanized. OE bolts are additionally coated with "Geomet" coating which in longer time is less prone to rust. However choosing this coating would make bolts more than twice as expensive.

I sent an email today too.. waiting for reply : )

So what are you all going to do if/when you get your new bolts, try and get new shocks from Koni or just fit them to the old shocks and hope the bushes aren't too damaged?

That's a good question. If the damage to the bushes is minimal I would hope that using a bolt with the correct shaft would take up the slack and prevent further damage but if it's bad then I'll have to put a warranty claim in. In reality I shouldn't really be considering to pay for these bolts myself.
Really it's just a Fiat/Abarth cock up. They have replaced dozens of Koni shocks. Some people have had them replaced for times, and it takes one individual on the Abarth forum to work out the cause of the knocking.

TBH I would say a Koni cock up? Surely if you supply an aftermarket kit which is what the FSD's started out as, they should fit with the standard fasteners.

Interesting I had our 500 rear Konis replaced the other Month with the new model/part number rear shock and they are so much better. It takes a very severe bump to induce a slight knock.

Interested to hear the results of the new bolts as I am still tempted to go for a set.

It seems sensible to me that one forum member should gather all the requests for these bolts into one large order and see if we can negotiate a better price. I'd have a set and would happily pay by Paypal prior to the order being placed.

I've just got this reply and I think this means just the shipping cost -

"the cost of package would be 200,00 zł PLN to the 0,5kg package.Yours is 0,3kg
time of delivery 3-4 days.
I will write it to the invoice as a next position if You order these goods.
All the payments should be in polish zloty PLN
We start producing Your goods after You pay pro forma invoice"

The cost I got for the bolts & washers worked out at 146.70 zioty PLN

1 Polish Zioty = .20 pounds sterling. So cost is £69.34. Not sure if VAT then has to be added to this.

Maybe we should investigate a UK source?

Thanks so much Gregi : )
I'm glad I could help! We can only hope that "thicker" bolts will prevent Koni from knocking in the future :)

I had just Esseesse Koni kit mounted and my rear Koni's with OE number 5743691 are dated March 2013 so they are quite "fresh". However before they were mounted to the chassis I put OE bolts through shock's joints and there was significant up and down bolts movement. I really doubt if they changed anything.

Our Koni FSD sets are designated only for Abarth/Fiat 500 and Ford Ka and not any other model on the market so I really don't see why through all of these years Koni did not change shock's joints e.g. decreased joints diameter.
