My 1.2 developed a knocking noise yesterday. It 'se3ems to be coming from front passenger wheel or around the centre of the engine bay. It isnt a load knocking but rather like a pice of thick plastic hitting something.

The noise only happens when I take my foot off the accelerator. The noise stays at the same volume but gets faster relative to wheel speed and not engine speed.

I've had a look underneath and cant see anything obvious.

Anyone any ideas and prices to fix?

I had really similar symptoms, turns out i had a loose wheel!

If ever you hear thunka-thunka-thunka from your front wheel, pull over; you may well find you have only two wheel nuts left and both of those are probably loose! Not that that has ever happened to me, honest!

I've had that in the past. This knocking isnt quite as loud as that. I have checked my wheels. It also only occurs when I take my foot off the accelorator

I had a similar thing but it knocked when accelerating and slowing, just not when cruising. It turned out to be a CV joint.

I had the same problem in my HGT and it turned out to be the front track rod end which cost £15 to replace. It was having a service at the time so can't comment on labour costs.

sort of sounds like the wheel of fortune noise? and is wheel speed dependant? i also have this and have had it for a while! - when you find out what it is let me know!!

Have you checked all the inner and outer CV join boots are in place?

If you dip the clutch when the noise is happening does it go away?

Havent checked everything yet. No, the noise does not go away when i dip the clutch. Noise only goes when I have either stopped or am accelorating.

Wheelho - yes, its a bit like the wheel of fortune noise, lol

You need to take the football cards out of your spokes then! :)

Wimmy, jack the car up and turn each front wheel in turn, see if it makes the noise.

I'd also recomend you change your gearbox oil, see if there are any metal shavings in it.

Thanks Tom.

I'll try and organise a jacking up sometime in the week and have a good look around first.

What are we looking at with metal shaving in the gearbox oil (pricewise)?

i'm off for 18 days wimmy after tuesday night, you know were i am just give me a ring if you want a hand

Lol, nice one Kev. I may be in touch later for your jack and planks :)

I had a slight knocking noise which was driving me crazy trying to find it. Never got louder, just faster the faster I went. Turned out to be a split in the plastic alloys,lol........took me ages to narrow it down though:(

And the bad news is........

Metal shavings in the gearbox oil! Looks like the diff. New gearbox required.....arse!

you will always get a few really tiny bits but you'd only see them if you let the oil settle.

Has all the oil got metal in it?
