Technical Key programming does not work on my Bravo

Hi All,

I have a problem with my 96 Bravo HLX.

I have had the car for over a year. When I bought it it had all the keys, espesh the all-important red key, with the paper code on it!

The remote central locking has not worked since I have owned the car, I just thought I'd get around to it one day, and this is the day!

I tried to program one of the keys (only one has working batts ) - The light flashes on the key ok, so I assume the key is fine.

So, I went through the process of entering the code using the console light method and everything went ok - It acknowledged the key fine, but the remote is still not opening/closing the doors.

Anyone have any ideas? Would love for remote c/l to work.

When you press the fob button does the light on dash/receiver respond?, if yes then the problem is with the power or controls to the actuators in the doors.

The light flashes on the key fob, but not on the receiver in the car.

I programmed the key using the method described by others and it behaved as it should (receiver stayed on after recognising key etc) but the key still doesn't do anything.

if the reciever is not lighting when the fob is pressed but has recognised the code when learning then i would suggest that the contacts have possibly become dirty or worn underneath the buttons resulting in no signal from the fob, it wouldnt do any harm to check it, but what ever you do DO NOT! use cleaning fluids like white spirit on cotton buds or any other solvents otherwise you will knacker it, only way is by using a normal pencil rubber. if still no joy after that then you could try this.. disconnect live off battery then press and hold the button on the remote while someone else re-attaches the battery lead you will be surpised.. good luck

Many thanks for your advice. I'm just a bit confused though. The light on the key flashes when I press it. If it had dirty contacts could it still not send a signal?

my error didnt read your first post properly, i take it the c/locking had been working before? if so have you ever changed the car battery or let it go flat ?

Yeah, I have been using my wife's car recently, so the battery had gone flat on my Bravo after about 2-3 weeks of non-use. I charged it away from the car, and then the problem occurred.

ok not sure if this will work for you but worth a try, same thing happens with corsa's common problem apparently

put your key in the ignition and as you crank the engine with the key you need to press the lock or unlock button at the same time if you get the timing right it might just work like i said same procedure for vaux corsa if the battery has been flat or off the car a while the reciever box loses signal from the fob and apparently doing the method describe strangley enough sorts the problem worth a shot though.

Before trying your 'time-critical' method I investigated further and discovered that after I had inputted the correct code and apparently registered the key the console LED flashed 18 times, not 6 as it should have done.
This indicates that the programming was not done correctly, but I tried it many times but still with 18 flashes.

Does this mean the key is faulty/needs new batts/some other problem?

You cannot reload the key fob by ignition key etc, only by the unlock code method:-

To prove receiver push the button on unit, receiver should flash when pushed.
Wait 30 secs until all flashing stops.

Push button and release, wait for first request flash then enter first code digit.
Repeat for all 4 digits - using no pushes for a zero digit.

receiver should start flashing if correct code is entered.
Whilst receiver is flashing hold in the receiver button, hold in key button, keep buttons pressed for 10 secs. when receiver led should stay on.
Sorry to repeat a well known procedure, apologies if you were doing it right.

If nogo, then disconnect battery for at least an hour.
In some instances an alarm connected can stop a key loading properly, so unplug alarm if you have one and retry loading.
It is possible for the RF part of the key to be faulty and not actually transmit although the digital part is ok with flashing etc. In this case get a s/h key from ebay and replace pcb in your key.

Ok here's where I'm at.

1. Press console button - Console light flashes.
2. Let go
3. Wait for single flash to input 1st digit of code.
4. Enter 1st digit of code.
5. Wait for single flash for next digit. Enter 2nd digit.
6. Repeat for all digits.
7. Console light flashes to say I've input the correct code.
8. Press console button and press keyfob.
9. Console light stays on.
10. Let go of both.

Now here's where I get confused...

11. Console light is now off. Should this be the end of the sequence??????
12. After a while I get 18 flashes from console light.
13. Keyfob doesn't open/close doors etc
------------------------

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I've replaced the batteries in the fob to no avail.

Ok the key is loaded ok, so looks like the receiver and key are ok. Really looks like the alarm system is blocking it some how, get under wing and disconnect it and see what happens. Maybe disconnect the multi connector into receiver for an hour.
Never heard of a unit flashing on its own after a time. Maybe its waiting for the country code to be entered, not sure never done that myself.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I tried disconnecting/reconnecting the receiver unit, but no joy.
I also disconnected/reconnected the alarm (getting to it was a royal pain in the a**...! )

Never mind, the r/c/l will have to wait for another time.

Anyway, all your advice and suggestions were very much welcomed, thank-you
