Hello, yesterday I have replaced the starter motor on my punto sx 60 1,2 from 1999 and something is wrong. I have removed the old starter motor a few days ago and left the battery disconnected and and only yesterday I had time to put the new one. After finishing this I can not start the car. The starter motor is turning but the engine won't fire up and in dashboard I have the yellow key symbol with code on all the time even after I lock the car is still on. It switches off only when I put the contact on. I have checked all the fuses and is all good any ideas what to do? How can I check if is a ECU problem?

It sounds as though the immobiliser box is getting tired, also sometimes the immo can get stuck in a software loop. Try disconnecting the battery for an hour, then connect up and try again. If no go, then you could try playing a heat gun or hairdryer over the immo internals, retry the battery off then on again.
If still no go, then check the ECU has power to it via the relay.
You may have to get the ECU, immo and key checked out if still faulty.
Tony.

Just noticed one important sentence -" keycode is on when I lock the car" which is puzzling, as there should be no power to the ecu to light the bulb, maybe something is stuck on in the immo and suppling power from there to light the bulb.

Thank you reddy4bed I have tried to connect and reconnect the battery a few times but with no luck, I will try the heating gun trick to see if it helps. Where is relay for ECU located and how cam I check if it has power?
Can anyone confirm for me that for the starter motor three wires(one to battery, one to alternator and the third one cant' remember where it goes) are connected to the top screw and the thin cable to the small screw below as I can remember how that was before removing the starter motor please?

I am using the blue key as is the only one i have. Can be that something is blocked because this morning the battery was completly flat. Any ideas what? Can anyone confirm if the cables for starter motor are in the right place please?

Hi, charge the battery FULLY,

look in Guides for wiring - BUT my recollection is a HEAVY RED cable from battery to M8 Terminal on Starters Solenoid,
small control wire ( blade fitting) goes onto the solenoid( to switch it),
no recollection of a 3rd wire..!!,
look in guides or ask in Punto 2B for a 2nd / 3rd opinion..,

Blue key is normally a slave KEY on the Mk1's = RED is important for Immobiliser issues,
BUT at 1999 yours MAY be Blue key only, again a SEARCH should clarify,

good luck,

Charlie

Can anyone help me with a wiring diagram for starter motor as i can't find one?
Please somebody with a fiat like mine can you have a look to how the wires are connected to your starter motor and post it here? Your help will be much appreciated

today I took out the starter motor and I have 1 big cable from battery that goes to the big screw on solenoid, 1 red little cable from ignition I think to small screw on starter motor solenoid, one big cable from alternator that is also coming to the same big screw like the one from battery and I have one more which I don't know what is it or where that should go. Is coming from the same bunch of cables where the small red cable from ignition is coming and at this end has like a blade connection with a hole that should go on a screw somewhere and looks like a ground. Anybody knows what that is or where it should be connected please?

I have pictures made to make it easier

The one I am not sure is the yellow one what is that one and where it should go. The blue comes from battery to the big screw, the red from ignition on that small screw, also from the blue screw is one more that goes to alternator(not visible in pictures) but the yellow one?
