Ive recently bought a mk2 punto, but it didnt have the keycode card with it in the users manual wallet....what is this code for?
The reason i'm asking is i want to change the battery and dont want to get the car immobilised or somthing.

its hasnt got remote central locking, just standard central locking by turning the key...if thats anything to do with it..

if i need the code is it a main dealer job?

cheers

The code is stored in the body computer, in non-volatile storage, so disconnecting the battery sholdn't mean it is lost. Your keys have a chip in them that carries the code, which is read by a loop on the ignition barrel, compared to the stored code by the body ECU which then disables the immobiliser if it is correct. You should have no problems just from replacing the battery!

Malty123,

I've read that in the UK, the keycode card is not supplied with new Fiats. This is something to do with a request by the Association of British Insurers (in theory, having the code would enable a thief to get a new key made/coded). If necessary, main dealers should be able to get the code from Fiat. This places limitations on getting replacement keys if both originals are lost (i.e. you have to go to main dealer).

I've separately seen reports of problems with immobiliser after fitting new cell in remote keyfob but this won't affect you as you don't have remote locking/immobiliser.

Can't get a key made from the code alone, the code only allows you to login to the immo, you still wouldn't be able to program new keys as the keys are precoded so you'd still have to go to fiat for a key or do another procedure that would also give you the code anyway.

Cor blimey, it's way too complicated. No wonder most burglaries are just to get car keys.

Where does logging in to the immobiliser get you?
What's this other procedure that gives you the code?
Is the code in a key fixed and the code in the immobiliser programmable (non-volatile)

I don't want or need to do anything with keys, I'm just keen to learn.

I was also forgetting that the key has physically to match the lock so that the barrel can turn (keys seem to have developed an awful lot since invention)

There is a code for your radio aswell which you will need if you take the battery out and have the standard stereo

I thought there would be with one i did recently, but after everything was hooked up, i turned on the radio and it was fine. No code needed.

True that Bred. I don't have that problem on the Punto as it's an after market head unit, but I do with the Jeep. Apparently a previous owner had the same problem as the code is written in the back of the owners manual!

If you don't have the code, you can ask very nicely on the "radio decode" thread, and possibly make a small donation, to get the code. Alternatively Fiat should be able to provide the radio code, but at considerable cost!

There is a way you can remove the pincode and cancheck for the radios

Maybe that had already been done then. I didn't do anything to the radio, just switched it on and it worked.

No on my black car because it's been sat so long the battery keeps going dead and code needed everytime.

Whereas my blue car (one I use all the time) I have an aftermarket unit in so don't need a code for that one! :D
