Heyup fellas!
I know the same answer is always, Go for a bigger engine, but seriously i cannot be bothered paying the insurance! so can all of you tell me about k&n filters and mod chips for my 80sx, firstly can i get them and from where????
what extra bhp will i recieve???
and what exactly does the chip do, and how much are they????
i like my car, i like the insurance, and it looks nice, Major speed isnt a problem cos the last time i had that i nearly killed myself. I just want that little extra kick to keep me happy.....
can you all help?
Paul

A K&N will give you nothing. An induction kit on its own usually results in less power at low and mid revs. The only thing it does is help the engine pick up the revs quicker.

Personally keep away from K&N and Green filters as they are crap. PiperX are the best.

Someone found a chip that claimed 10BHP gain but I don't think he has tried it.

Just remember all this will put up your insurance.

Re: Re: K&N Filters and Chipped

Just out of interest, how much (roughly) would a chip for my HGT155 be and how much gain should i expect.

If you could also give me cost & gains for an induction kit, i would be very grateful.

One last question, i have been looking at the Viper kits, but it looks huge...will it fit?

Re: Re: Re: K&N Filters and Chipped

The 155 is pretty much sorted as is and a chip won't do much more than a few BHP. A bit crap for £400+!

I don't think the Viper is actually THAT big, pictures I've seen of it show it to fit quite nicely.

Induction kits don't do much except make a lovely noise. Apparently the viper does have a good effect but that is probably mostly due to the very good cold air feed. Certainly with a normal induction kit you will very likely loose some mid range but it will rev a bit more happily.

Thanks Tom, you certainly seem to know your stuff.

Whats the best way to increase my 0-60 time, without breaking the bank, or my car..lol

I have tried go-faster-stripes, but they didnt do anything.

I have already got a full S/S system and a unfitted de-cat pipe (not fitted as yet as i just had to MOT it)

Thanks! :)

Umm.. drive down hills, tail winds, get out and push? :)

Apart from stripping the A/C off, removing weight from the car, or major costly engine mods there ain't much you can do. Sad fact of modern motoring.

Your cheapest option is nitrous.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: K&N Filters and Chipped

Yeah, i have seriously looked into that, pretty good at about £400 notes, for a good few extra horses.

The only thing that concerns me is..

1.What damage would be done to my engine
&
2.Insurance!!!

As far as i can tell it is now street legal as long as you have a sticker stating something like compressed gas etc...

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: K&N Filters and Chipped

Oh dear.. this is a worse can of worms than driving with your foggies on. :)

Nitrous does not itself damage the engine, what damages things is suddenly dumping 100BHP of the stuff into a little engine. The loads can do nasty things to your driveshafts, clutch, gearbox, crank, pistons, conrods...

Sensible use, especially with a controller that does soft start won't do your engine any harm. Might ruin your front tyres and cause your clutch to fry if its already a bit dodgey.

As for the stickers, there is no requirement to have a compressed gas symbol. Technically you'd need that and an oxidising agent symbol. I don't have any warnings on my van when I carry my gas welding gear, I don't need to.

As for road legal, depends on the mood of the copper that has just caught you doing 0-100 in 5 seconds in a 40 zone. :)

Some say it is, other people say its not, I don't know! I'm sure your insurance company would have something to say about it.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: K&N Filters and Chipped

If i do decide to go for it, i will get it done properly.

I have had good quotes from the Wizards of NOZ, with adjustable controllers etc.

Apparently there is a safety thing that stops the car from over revving, and stops the NOZ cutting in at too low a rev and putting too much strain on the engine etc.

..and i probably won't go for the full 100, most likely the 50 or 75. should be enough :)
