I'm looking at these K&N filter elements, they just replace the paper filter in your air box, are they any good, will they give the car the sound of a performance air filter, or will it just be un noticeable that its in there?

Also, will there be a difference in economy with one of these filter elements?

(Just incase - 1.2 Bravo)

Just incase i've not made it clear what they are, here's a pic:

AFAIK they are just cleanable versions of the ones fitted as standard. Same as normal for sound, economy etc. just that you can clean it rather than throw it away ?

Make sure you've declared it as well, last time I was at the insurance repair centre (having a repair re-done due to a botch job the 1st time) the insurance assessor told me they'd just invalidated someones policy for having not declared one of these :(

oh right cheers for that, i probably won't bother then. Just been on the K&N site and they say you should replace your filter every 15,000 miles, and that this saves you from having to replace them cos you can wash this one out. I'll probably just leave it til I get a propper full induction kit.

If you are going to get a panel filter then dont get K&N get the pipercross one. its foam which filters better and washable.
they even do one for the 1.6, thats what i got because there is no induction kit for the 1.6 so i got the next best thing.

cheers richard, is there a sound difference? do you get any extra roar from it or not?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: K&N Filter Elements - Advice needed please - any good?

Yes, there is about a 5% increase in noise, with no noticeable increase in power. You'll also be down about £135.

As it was mentioned earlier, don't forget to tell your insurers about the proposed changes. Most of the BIG companies will cancel your policy or refuse a quote.

Stick to the standard air box chief, it'll save you loads of grief in the long run.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: K&N Filter Elements - Advice needed please - any good?

Rog, the panel filters are OE replacements, as its using the existing pipework and airbox it won't affect your insurance. Its like saying you need to tell them if you got the filter from Halfords or Fiat.

Drilling the airbox WILL affect your insurance. :)

I was referring to induction "kits", not the marque replacements, Tom; which incidentally is in my Honda en ce moment. K+N, ironically, cheaper than the Honda part and I don't like parting with my money unecessarilly.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: K&N Filter Elements - Advice needed please - any good?

a K & N panel filters can be just as good as a induction kit, it dont suffer from heat as it uses the oe air feed. max power did a test on them with a saxo vtr. std vtr, 1 with full exhaust and panel filter and another with induction kit and full exhaust, 4-6bhp increase on induction kit car with a 5-6 bhp on panel filter, so there isnt a lot in it,

Dan if there is a difference in noise/performance it is minimal. the only reason i got it, is because its doing a better job than the original and its washable.

i'm thinking i should get one now then, mmm
it won't effect my fuel economy then will it, and it will save me from buying replacement paper filters in the future

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: K&N Filter Elements - Advice needed please - a

I was thinking of putting a K&N panel filter in at the last service, mainly because diesel service intervals are only 6k miles (2 services since June already, next one due soon!) - I'd rather not throw away a £20 filter every 4 months. Also fancied a bit better throttle response etc...

A word of warning though. When I checked with my insurance company, they wanted another £30 a month. It was Norwich Union (I'm sure they'd complain if you put a new set of mats in!) and I reckon I was speaking to a girl in a call-centre in India who wouldn't know what a "free-flow air-filter" was if one fell on her, but be careful!

Let's just say NU won't be "quoting me happy" when it comes to renewal time in 6 weeks.....
