It's basically a fancy method of injecting diesel in two bursts rather than all at once. Gives a smoother more efficient burn which improves power and mpg while also being quieter.
The next stage is multi-jet which injects the diesel in 5 bursts giving even more power and efficiency.

I think it stands for 'jet', I'm pretty sure I read that on another forum

I thought it was Jet Turbo Diesel (JTD), and then you have the MultiJet Turbo Diesel (MJTD), or am I wrong?

Jetronic was a Bosch injection system for petrol engines that started back in the 70s if I remember correctly
