jtd start pre heat glo query

hi folks. hope you can pin point the source of my problem ? My car ( 1.9jtd Marea '01 ) is not starting each time. The coil light sometimes doesnt come on when the key is turned yet the car starts fine first time. Other times it does come on and starts just the same.
Recently its not being starting - just turning over - until about the third attempt on the key ( i dont let it turn over for long to protect the starter ) - when the coil light does comes on and it does start.
I'm thinking this might be to do with the pre heat system, rather than the glo plugs. what does anyone else think ? and where are the particular relays and pre heat "unit " located? Is there a way to test these components? cheers for any help. thanks.
PS - is there still no manuals available for these engines?

the glow plug light should come on each and every time you turn the key (even if just for less than a second when engine is warm). even if the glow plugs were inoperative, a JTD should have no real difficulty starting in normal weather. btw, when the glow plug light does not come on, do the management light and immobiliser light work as normal, and does the fuel pump run for a few seconds ?. If not, there may be an issue with the ECU/injection system supplies.
Anyway, you could first check all the fuses under the bonnet (also examine the connections closely). The glow plug relay unit itself is mounted just beside the fuel filter (a black box about 3x4 inches). check the connections to it also.
