Technical JTD No power

Hello,

In addition to the ball joint issues that we have with our Ulysse, it has now developed another problem.

The car will start and run fine, but when accelerating, there is a noise from the engine. It is not related to engine speed, more engine load;

When you accelerate the noise is there, but when you lift off, it goes, although the engine revs are still up, the noise will go until you next apply the throttle.

So I am thinking either an air leak, or a blown/worn turbo.

I am more inclined to think the turbo is on its way out, as the pipe to the inlet from the turbo has oil in it. There is also some blue smoke when the engine is revved.

I would of liked to of taken it out on a test drive today, but I am waiting on parts to finish the wishbone. (New rear mounting bolts and a new clamp for the anti roll bar bush).

So if it is the turbo, what type is it, and can I use one from another 2.0 HDi (406, Expert etc etc.) or are they specific to the Ulysse JTD?

Hello,

Been thinking about this:

The smoke out of the back was blue, I would of thought that white would have been more indicative of a blown turbo.

Also, if the turbo was crackered, then surely I wouldn't be able to hear it?

The noise is only there when the turbo would (normally) be making boost.

Thursday (The first chance I will get) I shall take the pipe off from the turbo to the inlet manifold, and check it all for leaks, and give it a good clean out.

Will let you know what I find, although any thoughts you have in the mean time would still be appreciated.

What does the noise sound like?

If it is like air escaping hissing sound it could be a leak/crack in the intercooler plastic moulding located under the engine in the centre which is positioned just perfect to kiss sleeping policemen (speed humps)

Mine had a crack all along the seam and I had lack of power and black smoke too.
Once sealed with gripfill all was good again.

I am hoping that it is just a split pipe, as I don't fancy replacing the Turbo. Its a good 6hr job, and considering its my job.....

Still, knowing the rotten luck that we are having at the mo, it will be, but here is hoping.

Still they say it comes in three's, the ball joint went, our washing machine stopped working, and now this, so I guess, our luck can't get much worse, can it?

Fingers crossed for you it is a simple split hose.

I was quite amazed when I found my plastic pipe section split all down the seam almost full lenght.

Okay,

Had the inlet pipes off today, and no obvious signs of cracks/splits.

So, I proceeded to take the rest of the pipes off to have a look at the turbo.

Got the inlet pipes off this, and had a quick rock of the compressor wheel.

OMFG! There is more play in that than a park!

I think it is safe to say that the turbo is crackered!

So, I am now in the process of taking the turbo off the engine to replace it (When I source a replacement at least).

Not happy! neither is the Mrs, more expense, and my son is not happy either, as he has had to miss going to the Harley Davidson shop for some clothes....

I am not happy either, as I dont relish the thought of replacing the turbocharger with the car on axle stands.

But needs must...
