Hi guys
been a long time coming and finally my clutch has started to slip in 5th gear under load so its time for it to come out - ive stretched it out as long as i can but now the car is not fun to drive :(. even when driving on cruise control now it slips so its defo fubar.
ive changed 1.6 gearboxes and done 3 clutches on my own with no problems in the past on the deck, other than it was ultra heavy.
now im wondering if the jtd gearbox is about the same weight, if it is then i can i will do it on the floor but if it is heavier i will put it into a garage. (something i loathe to do).
has anyone done both or have any idea about the weight on the jtd (115bhp) box - i hope its about the same but suspect not.
im going to assess the state of the dmf when the box is off, if it is in poor condition i will source a smf from a doblo or ullesis.
speaking to a friend who also has a stilo 1.9 3 dr he hasnt changed the dmf in two clutch changes (very high mileage car) so i hope it ok on mine...
cheers
roy

when i done the clutch on my JTD 115, the box never left the engine bay, managed to get it to slide over enough to allow me to get into the clutch plate to change it,

seriously???
was you able to check the flywheel and change the concentric slave cylinder like this?
also i take it you popped both drive shafts or did you just remove one on the passinger side?.
im not sure if i like the idea of that box hanging in the air like that - how did you get it to remain in place as soon as you removed the bellhousing bolts.
cheers
roy

i had full use of a garage, so i used a gearbox stand to hold the box in place while un-doing the bolts in the bell-housing, then once it was free i managed to slide it over enough where it jammed enough to do no damage but also remained within the engine bay, i had a good foot gap between the flywheel and bellhousing while in this location

as for the drive shafts, i kept the drivers side in position (came out when i moved the box) and removed the passenger side

THANKYOU!!!
2kg in it, im suprised as the 1.6 box is terrible and the jtd box seems a lot better built.
my original clutch has lasted 152k miles so not to terrible, my wifes 1.6 lasted 67k (centre splines went).
ive just ordered a new clutch and concentric slave from euro car part for £172 all in.
I did ring around this morning for a few quotes and nearly fell over at the prices just to fit the thing, thus im doing it tomorrow myself.
while im at it the oil in both gearbox and engine oil after a flush, and changing the fuel filter as its never been changed by me (80k miles).
Just need the weather to hold off tomorrow.
one day i will go to annual leave without having to do a major job on one of the stilos....

Good luck.

44kg is a bit more than "fairly heavy" but at least less than "oooh fook its on my foot"

Lol ive done engines on fiestas on my own without lifting gear (i did draw the line at my 1600e cortina as that thing weighed a tonne) , yeah it was hard work but i done it, as im getting a bit to old to be exerting too much effort now ive called in a mate to help me with the lift,
typically i was gona start it this afternoon and hopefully complete it before 7pm but the twins came over ill so im stuck in with them, im now clock watching for the mrs to come home so i can crack on......
ive got all the new clutch and extra bits and bobs to complete the job calling my name on the dining room table... tick tock tick tick tick tock arrgggghhh

well i knocked this on the head in the end, i got rained off 3 times on the trot and that really just done it for me (that and getting older i think), i found a garage that will fit my clutch for £250 all in so took them up on the offer.
I asked him about the dmf and he said no problem they have a way around that, weld the bleeder~!
i had planned to get a smf if mine was shot but this seems the best idea. he said there hasnt been any problem only the more bus noise on tickeover (which really dosnt bother me.
just playing the waiting game now, christ this is the first time in a few years ive been without a car, i really miss it :(

Hi guys
got the car back yesterday evening, ive got to re wire the cruise control as its flagging up a fault (probo broken cable when they removed the battery box), i have brake sensor fault which is inline with the cuise control - i will fault find and hopefully rectifie that later.

anyways, my DMF was shot, there was too much movement, as i already stated the garage had offered to weld it up so i took them up on the offer.
my clutch on the otherhand was low - not drastically low but low, the wear lines were starting to vanish.
the cause of the slipping was down to the awful dmf.
Now driving the car feels excatly the same, same pull (like a rocket) no snatching clutch which i though could result, the only thing that ive noticed change is the car now growls when you put your foot down, i initally though it the flex joint was blowing but it was down to the now smf.
Im more than pleased with that, the growl is kinda cool, not in your face and makes the car sound powerful, not far from the v8 growl (a lot quieter though) you know what i mean.
I cannot say if i can hear more diesel clatter on tickover as my old dmf was shot - i really need to have another stilo jtd to compare it to.
the cost to get it welded up was £20!! far cry from the many £100s ive been quoted for a new dmf or even a smf replacement with the same result.
The garage charged me £250 (mr clutch wanted £700) for the fitting of the clutch so for £270 it really wasnt worth my time doing it myself.
the clutch and centric slave came to just under £200, so for just under £460 the job was completed.
the garage was DA motors in wickford if any locals want fiat work done there they are highly recomended.
