Help!

I asked for advuce on components the other day and got loads of info, and thanks to all who did.

However, I have been offered a bit of a deal on some KBL subs and components. The components are JBL GTO 505CE - 13cm 75w RMS 225w peak and the subs are JBL GT3 - 10. 2 x 10" subs 200w RMS and 1600w peak.

A few questions:

1. Are they any good?
2. Are they any good for the price? (£110 fir 2 subs and components)

Set up.
I have a 900watt 4 channel amp. My idea is to run the new subs and my components from this and my 6x9's and original front speakers from my head unit.

3. Does this sound ok?
4. What do you suggest I do with my spare 2 x 10" subs?

All sensible suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance

Chief (lol)

Come on tom, i know your on line. Money is burning hole in my pockets, lol

Re: Re: JBL Subs and components

How old are the subs and components mate?

I used to buy JBL stuff all the time and have had loads of there subs amps and and several sets of JBL 6x9's and have always been impressed with the quality and sound all along the range.

The components ur looking at can set u back anything from 70 - 110 quid new so thats not too bad a deal for the whole lot mate as long as there in good condition.

Wot makes the amp u have? Remember 900 watts doesnt always mean its gonna be bouncing your car along the street. I had, and still have somewhere, a 100 watt JBL amp and it could move a 12" sub better than any 1000watt amp of inferior build. Quality of power is ALWAYS better that quantity.

If i was u i'd bridge the amp to run the two subs and run the components from the head unit mate. Many watts a channel does the head unit put out? Lose the original front speakers and replace them with the components.

If u want i can e-mail u a template u can make to allow the front speakers to be changed to 13cm fitment.

Re: Re: Re: JBL Subs and components

Ty.

The speakers I have got are all brand new. Head unit is 4 x 50. Amp 'supposedly' spits out 110w rms per channel but I find that unlikely (SX amp)

So u reckon
ditch the front
run my components thru the head unit
6x9 head unit
bridge amp to run 2 subs

A diagram would be great - [email protected]

Re: Re: Re: Re: JBL Subs and components

Been fixing my van, new radiator.. horrible job in the wet.

JBL stuff is not half bad, alot of people use it. The GT3 subs are quite good sound quality, the GT4s are supposedly better. JBL components are middle of the road as far as quality goes. You can do alot worse.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: JBL Subs and components

Ty tom.

I'm not into mega quality as i dont have many bucks. Most ppl know me on here as mr cheapo.

As long as theyre ok i should be fine. What do u reckon to wiring them? Head unit or amp?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: JBL Subs and components

JBL will give you quite good quality for the price.

Amp all the way, HU amps are poo. Bin the 6x9's :)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: JBL Subs and components

Lol, you really dont like 6x9's

Hmmm, do i put them in original mounts or further up in the door cards?

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: JBL Subs and components

6x9's are good if you don't want to use up bootspace with a sub, they are useless otherwise.

Mount the woofer in the door as normal, mout the tweeter in the stock location. I actually cut a hole in the top of the normal tweeter covers and mounted mine in the hole. You want the tweet pointing at the windscreen, not the people in the car otherwise it will sound harsh.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: JBL Subs and components

Tom may be onto something with the dislike to 6x9's. Personally i have a set put paid good money for them as i like the midrange they provide. Although i have fitted several systems with various different rear speaker sizes and was impressed by a lot of them.

As ur headunits got 50 watts per channel u may possibly find that it will do better at powering the speakers than the amp will. wot make is the unit?

If u connect the speakers to the amp ,both the 6x9's and the components, then u will obv only have 1 channel for each of the subs and in reality that aint really enough.

I mailed u the diagram for the new mounting plate for the 13cm speaker if u wanns change the one in the doorcards.

jbl subs

Hey

I used to have the GT3 series of JBL subs in my car (2x15") and I think you can't really get better subs for the money (if you are looking for a mix of SQ and SPL).

I only sold them cause I am a car audio freak and 2x15" (600w rms total) wasn't enough ;)

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: JBL Subs and components

Its not really a case of how much/little power the head unit amp puts out, its that they are usually really low quality amps and distort very easily.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: JBL Subs and components

Its a Sony Head Unit. I know Tom doesnt like these either and will advise me to ditch this with the 6x9's, lol

Re: jbl subs

The problem with 6x9's is that they are oval...this presents 2 main problems

1. The cone is 'stiffer' at the narrow part than the wider part which at high levels distorts the sound wave.

2. The speaker is oval, sound waves are round.

Sony HU's are not as bad as the 6x9's :)

Re: Re: jbl subs

@ Tom - How do you do it???

I type a reply...

You type a reply over 6hrs later and still get higher up the list...lol

Does it go on popularity? :)

JBL's are all good for the price you pay. you may want to go to motor-world superstore or check out motor-world.co.uk as all JBL speakers/amps are on sale. i have just bought a top of range W12GTi 700W rms sub for £250, when these usually retail at £600!
as for those GTO505ce components they are half price at £50 now and the GT3 10in sub is £30!!! i cant beleive some of the bargains.

Re: Re: JBL Subs and components

THats where I got them from :)

Re: Re: Re: JBL Subs and components

have you installed them yet?

Re: Re: Re: Re: JBL Subs and components

Yeah and they sound impressive! Very impressed for the amount of money. however, I am getting a lot of alternator whirring now the components are in. A couple of Ground Loop thingymabobs should sort that tho. Just doing a full boot build at the mo, will post pics when complete
