But that IS MY point many on low incomes cant afford to pay for the best and have to make do with what they can afford ..maybe some on here would like to try and see how far the pittance some have to live on and how far it would go trying to feed a family and hungry children ..and while I agree with you point of buying fags etc not all people are the same and you cant tar all with the same brush ..

i'm not trying to tar everyone with the same brush. Its more about lifestyle choices

Would you rather serve a roast chicken dinner to your family, your children, when that chicken will have spent its life sitting in its own faeces and urine? Or a free range that hasn't been sujected to that kind of degredation? (sp?)

As i have said many times before i'm describing MY choices and explaining why i would rather pay that little bit extra

Not everyone smokes, not everyone drinks etc but i'm sure almost everyone buys oven chips, microwave meals, chicken dippers etc

I think for many the micro meal /ready meal culture is here to stay many of the older generation never took time to pass on the skills of cooking to there children and I was fortunate to have as a lad and from my wife who is one of the best cooks you will ever see a good balanced diet ..and her being a manager of a care home for the elderly for the last 27 years her residents always get the best but even there she never went to the extra expense of buying free range products for the home and they never ever complained ..and I am sure that will never change now that she is CEO of the company.. some people just cant afford to have these luxuaries when living on a fixed small income..

Here to stay as long as roast chicken??

Battery chickens taste like chicken so why would there be any complaints about the food?

It is a business, why should they pay any extra if they've had no complaints so far?

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on the income. We have what would be classed as a low income coming into our home, yet i still manage to make the changes, we run 2 cars and yes i smoke. Only my husband works so there is only one income coming in, we're hardly what you would call well off.

As i've said, if people want to make the changes they will. If they don't they won't and i'm not condemning those people why should i? A couple of months ago i would have bought a 2 for a fiver chicken, its just that my beliefs have now changed

Thats all nowt more nowt less

Maybe a good idea at a fiat forum meet in the future to have a chicken tasting contest and see who can actually tell one from the other ..now that would be an interesting one ..any takers ;)

I will supply the chicken and we will see who can tell the difference ..now should it be oven cooked or BBQ ..:chin: we will work this out nearer the time (y)

Well if you buy a free range and a battery chicken from leading supermarket, i will do the same from a different one

Oven cooked cause bbq can change the 'normal' taste of food and this experiment is based on every day eating (y)

Fair enough deal done (y)

Just need to find a meet that will be close enough for us both to get too :p

And no telling your friends which one is what on MSN either :nono: this will be a fully above board chicken tasting experiment :)

no, they will go up. assuming demand is quite inelastic and so remains constant, but supply decreases, then the average price level will rise.

Actually they will go down as the niche market turns into a competitive market, like free range eggs did. Supply won't decrease, the market will adapt to increase production to meet demand. At some point they will match each other and equilibrium will be reached. There will only be a small point during, which production is trying to meet demand.

On the program last night it stated that there would never be enough land for free range products to becomes as big an enterprise as battery is ..and with that in mind and if this is true then they will never be able to supply enough in the first place as demand will outstrip supply ..and once all this hype has died down everyone will soon return to the battery products again ..

haha i promise!

You also have to weigh the chicken before and after cooking, to see how much the weight drops. I can guarantee that the £2.50 chicken will loose a lot of weight due to water loss. So if you look at the cost per kg or usable chicken you need to take this into account. A 2kg fresh free range chicken doesn't have the same meat content as a broiler chicken.
