ok, after a hard disc failure I had to rebuild the laptop, doing a complete new install. before I did this I managed to retrieve the windows/users folder with mine and the mrs' log on folders in there and not lose a file.
now then, I have reinstalled vista (don't flame me I like it and I'm skint) and iTunes but something from my memory, possibly something I have read or seen means if I sync my iPhone now I will wipe the iPhone.
is there a way around this? in my old log on folder there's an iTunes music folder.

use a different prog to get all your stuff off the iphone

what stuff are you wanting?
the iphone will sync as a new set up
so deletes and then reinstalls the library

plenty of managers here if you need ot get stuff off the phnoe first

i basically not bothered about the music, but i dont want to lose the apps i have paid for or all my SMS/messages and contacts

your apps will be in your itunes account

so they should remain as purchased
wait for someone bought an iphone to confirm
check out the managers wiki for what progs do what

All your apps remain on your apple account, so you won't loose any of them. I you do they're free to download again.

Open iTunes. Delete old iPhone backups and then back it up from scratch again if you worried about anything being deleted.

The only time syncing causes things to be deleted is when syncing iPod of example and then plugging them into a computer with a different iTunes account. Ca basically only be synced to one account. If its the same account on different computers thought there isn't an issue, although I don't sync personally, just click and drag :)

I say..... Back it up to iCloud then it won't be a problem

Unless of course you never installed iOS5 ;)

Your purchases can always be re-downloaded as are stored on your account so it's just preserving the texts and contact which an iCloud back up can handle easily.

And I should point out I have an iPhone, iPod and an iPad and have never had any of them 'break down' however I have watched many friends swearing at their google powered phones down the pub because it wont respond to even a simple task. For the most part it does come down to the user
