i assume he found a wet test gave better compression than a dry test, which tells you the losses are between the piston ring and cylinder liner. on the 1242 engine this is usually caused by coolant entering the cylinder during a head gasket leak.coolant doesnt compresses as easily as air.

its not the end of the world, but replacing the piston ring and cylinder liner could easily work out more expensive than fitting a scrapyard block.
