ok so i'll admit, my car started making funny screeching noises about two weeks ago and i'm pretty lazy and haven't done anything about it. my friend had told me if it was the break pads it would make the noise when i touched the brakes but touching the breaks actually stopped it. said if it made the noise while accelerating from rest then it was the fan belt, it doesn't do that either. where the hell is this noise coming from?could it just be a simple case of something has rusted?:)

Can't offer a solution, but I have the same problem!!

My squeel comes from the front off-side wheel (I'm pretty shure anyway). It takes about 3 miles to occur and braking and cornering causes it to stop for a while, before returning again. Sometimes acceleration stops it too.

The noise started since I changed the front brake pads, I used Halfords own. I wonder if its the piston in the caliper not withdrawing enough (due to slight corrosion?) after braking, causing the pads to stay slightly in contact with the disc.

I also found that when the wheel gets removed (tyre change etc) it goes away for longer.

Anyone got any ideas?

yeah everything you just described seems to happen with my car too. someone suggested my brake pads need realigned. going to try that in the hope it'll stop. its pretty bizarre.

The noise might be caused by the dust shield lightly touching the disc. Jack up the wheel and turn listening for any noise. Take off the wheel and make sure that the dust shield is clear of the disc. It may be necessary to bend it slightly.
