:) Hi Guys - Have a big huge grin on my face this evening :D
as we may have the answer for the dreaded ECU problem eveyone has
with their Stilo's. i.e. airbag warnings, management warning plus all
the rest. :(

Came across this guy on UTube - please have a look as I think
this guy may have solved lots of problems some of us have. (y)

Here is the link :-

Will try this myself tomorrow and report back to the forum on
it's success or failure. ;)

Hope this helps - Cheers & Beers - Linamp :D

this might be a solution in some cases but most problems are caused by cracked soldering joints under the microprocessor on the 'wrong' side of the circuit board.
A prober repair ( "BGA reballing") involves desoldering all 128 connector pins, removing the circuit board, removing the BGA microprocessor on the bottom side of the circuit board (with hot air or preferrably with an infrared station) , removing old soldering residue and cleaning the pcb and bottom of the microprocessor , placing a new soldering Ball Grid Array , resoldering the microprocessor on the new ball grid at the exact position (infrared station is the best but expensive solution) - resoldering the 128 pins of the connectors and resealing the lid.
This is definately not a simple DIY job , so when just resoldering the connector pins solves your problems you're lucky !

:) Hi Guys and thanks for your comments. (y)

To be honest I was rather disapointed with the response
from the forum, :( did think that more people would have
had a slightly more positive input.

Your comment YellowStilo (which is much appreciated) was
I might say rather negative. The guy in the UTube clip did
point out and indicate he was only pushing a few pins back
through. Then redo the solder on the back of the pin.
Not sure many would go to all the trouble you suggested
should be done to the board. Probably cheaper to buy a
new ECU.

Anyway, am grateful for your comments. Did not have
chance to look at mine today as it's been pouring all day. (n)

Will update this post when I have done mine.

Thank you again - Cheers & Beers - Linamp ;)

I can't see what's negative on my comment ?
I just pointed out what's the most common fault on these ecu's and that a BGA reballing job is not a simple DIY job and that you're lucky when the pin resoldering job solves your problem.....

Another negative comment ;-) problem is only workin on the......wait for it......which he has.......a 1.6 model stilo. Which state in youtube. 1.8 models are different the ecu is not mounted on the engine. Now I have the dreaded "loose connection" and my ecu is not near the engine......just thought I'd point that out folks B-)

:) hi again and my thanks for your input. (y)

Thanks Stestilo7110 for the heads up on the position of the
ECU. Of course mine is the 1.6, same as the guy on Utube,
did not think that other versions would be different.

Ok Yellowstilo, did not mean to imply your input was
negative. Just thought more people would have thought
it would be a good idea to try. Your detailed explanation
on how the board would be fixed should have been enough
to put all us DIY fans off for life. LoL :D

On the subject of my ECU - had a look at it today, but found
no pins bent or fallen through. So it looks as if it is back
to square one again. :(

I am inclined to think that it is not the ECU near the engine
on the 1.6 - more likely it is the Airbag ECU.

Have listed the faults listed from the garage in another post,
but as of yet, not had an answer on how to fix them faults.

Thank you again for time and inputs. (y)

Mine looked like this when I took mine to pieces a few months ago.

Resoldered them all and it worked a bit better but still dodgy now and again. Had to get a new ECU in the end and all ok now :)

:)Hi again - many thanks for the photos of the ECU.(y)

Very interesting - when I looked at mine they seemed
OK as in the first photo. But will definately have to look
more closer.
It is surprising what you can miss. :(
Will post back what I find.

Again many thanks for taking the time to send the
photos. For me and I am sure many others will
benefit from your good work. (y)

:)Hi and thanks SypheRrr for your post. (y)

Hope you have your problem sorted and the car
is running Ok for you.

I did think that my ECU had issues, but checked it out
and it seems to be fine. My problem is with the "Airbag"
system. My car has no problems starting or running, in
fact it is really a fine ride. (y)
It's just this airbag light I can't put out.
But am still working on it, so again my
thanks for your input and hope yours keeps going good.;)

Thanks again - Linamp (y)

We do think its a good idea to try. We said this when the guy in the video posted it before. The internet is not new mate and its also not a race. If it was you just lost. I was also having warning issues and using google before I was a member here it was saying ECU problems. After asking on this forum the battery was suggested and as I needed to replace mine due to age I got one with a higher ampage. all problems have now gone.

After many errors when car is cold like: loose connection, and variable temperature indicator i'm open ECU. Find some crack into pins, for sure i'm resolder all 128pins for sure, now all works great :D i hope new solder is good enugh.

Some pictures after resolder all pins:

I sometimes get a "Loose Connection" error (as well as EML "Engine Fault" which appeared a few months ago but hasn't gone away by itself like it's supposed to... :D ).

What's the most likely cause? A flattish battery? Mine is slowly fading away (I'm already lining up an 096 to replace it... just waiting for pay-day... :D )

Bad battery, bad earths, corrosion in fusebox can cause it. I also had it caused by a bad coil pack so check if there are any error codes for any cylinder. Try jumping it to another car and make sure headlamps and fan are off before turning it over if the fault is gone its most likely the battery.

Hello all,

Yes this resoldering does help in certain cases, after that if it doesn't help only thing left to try is reballing the processor, but after all these fixes, once established that ecu works satisfactory, it is essential to relocate it next to the battery tray!!!
keeping it on top of the engine where the factory has fitted it for whatever reason might result in all these errors reappearing again.
Initially the solder on those pins is cracking due to vibrations from the engine and so many heat/cool cycles.. All of these are ticked off once the ECU is relocated.

Dear Fiat Gurus!

I've bought an ill little Stilo! Please help me with my ECU problem...

I've uploaded a picture of my freshly opened ECU from a 2002 Fiat Stilo 1.6 16v. I noticed two major faults:
- One pin has sunken from its place,
- There is a poped / burnt yellow thingy-bit (with the following text written on the top of it: A336V N3705)

The car symptoms:
- I can start the engine (starts relatively easily even if it's cold/warm), it runs roughly, and there is a huge amount of "misfire", especially in low gears/speed. Sometimes it runs a bit better (~1/8 of the times), and on autobahn speed (120+ km/h) it's much better, there is less misfiring. I guess the performance loss is pretty huge (I've never driven a healthy 1.6 before... XD ).
- Constant Engine failure, constant beeping, but there is a thin bit of revrange (around 3000) when it stops the beeping, and computer only says "Motor abstellen" not "Motor störung".
- There is also Airbag failure 3/4 of the times, and the car thinks both front doors and the boot is open...

Tomorrow I will be getting my VAG KKL cable, hopefully I can start the diagnosis as well. Till then, I try to resolder the sunken pin, but what should I do with the yellow part?!

Thank You for your help in advance! You are awesome guys! Keep it up the great work.
Cheers from Hungary.
