Is Java script safe?

I was in the Old Codger Mobile this afternoon and a chap came on the radio saying that a security "hole" has been discovered in Java Script and it is being exploited before Oracle have had time to close the hole, and that he recommended disabling it for now.
Has anybody else heard of this, and what does disabling it do?
I noticed already that I had to manually complete my log in to the FF for example.

disabling it will stop anything using javascript from working. do it now and see for yourself it wont damage anything

Javascript is in a LOT of web based stuff. And no it's never anywhere near 100% safe, you can even get a virus through Google Images, the dirty bastards embed a Javascript exploit to launch a trojan dropper and boom your infected.

If you have Java on your machine then the best thing to do is uninstall it.
If nothing breaks then leave it like that. If stuff does break then install Java 7 update 7 (the latest version).
