Hi, lads i have a question for you. Can I use oil 5w-40 for Punto MK1 1.2 engine 60hp? Currently i`m driving with 10w-40. Which of them is better for the engine?
I`m from Bulgaria , temperatures in winter are -15, -20, during the summer +35, +40.
Give me advice, please. 10x

Stick to the manual & get into the habit of frequent oil & filter changes, especially so if you do a lot of stop/start driving.
I do a long distance driving.

10w40 is thinner when cold than 5w40.
Actually the opposite is true. 5w-40 is thinner when cold. This means this oil can be better when outside temperature is cold and the car makes short journeys. I will use it in winter if I had it. The only convern I will have is leaks as 5w-40 is thinner and also usually is fully synthetic oil at that grade.

the lower the 'w' number the better its cold protection ;)
gear oil isnt really thin, its thick

edit: I know everything I you generally see regarding fiat FIREs says 10W40 but not all manufacturers are like that, my Suzuki has this chart instead in the workshop manual

Now among Suzuki people they all are adamant you have to use 10w30 in uk climate or you'll damage it, but looking at the chart you can clearly see 10w40 or even 10w50 would be fine. I use fully synth 10w40 in my Suzuki and have done for about 20k miles, totally fine.

Now coming back to the original question of this thread, much like the Suzuki, Fiat says you should use 10w40 (if you wanna get really specific they say tutela zc 75 synth, which is a fully synthetic 10w40). And everyone always states categorically you should use 10w40. But if you refer to the actual Fiat Technical Manual it also states, "For temperatures below -20°C it is advisable to use Selenia Performer 5w30" (this is also a fully synthetic oil).

So, like jimbob, I am also a change oil twice a year person, so my advice for the best protection would be around when it starts getting cold do an oil and filter change and cinsider using 5w30 (assuming your given temperature figures are in °C) and then when it start warming up again in spring do another oil and filter change using 10w40.

As I stated earlier, stick to what Fiat recommends. I've been around cars both professionally & pleasure for over 40yrs & the car industry know what they're talking about. I could go into the ins & outs of oil but there is more & enough information out there. Any qualified mechanic who knows what he's talking about will tell you regular oil & filter changes are far more beneficial than trying to pick a "best" oil. No such thing as a best oil, only suitable oils, so there we have it, all true, but helped on a bit by Mr White & Mr Mackay...:)
