My car has got this irritating ticking noise its had it for a while and hasn't got worse or causes the car any problems, i assumed at 1st that it was an exhaust leak but this weekend i have replaced the downpipe (which was blowing) and sealed up the joins in the exhuast that where blowing. ive checked the entire system for leaks and there are none. I used to get the smell of exhuast gases coming up from the rear of the engine (where exhaust manifold is on a 1.6) but that has gone now.

The ticking gets faster with revs which is leading me to think it is either belts (cambelt was done 22,000 miles ago) or altenator but im not sure. Has anybody come across this before? and how can i sort it?

Heres a video so you can see what i mean.

Any help much appreciated.

New cambelt tensioners can fail.
Mine did after a week or so.

Get it back and have it checked.

I'll try pop in tomorrow and get them to have a look.

I have stripped my rear seats out and can hear the ticking at the rear. after having a look on the internet its leading me to belive it could possible be incorrect valve clearence on my exhaust valves.

I'll see what fiat say.

Cheers for the heads up on the tensioner.

Fiat wern't bothered about it and said 'thats just engine noise'.

Im gona take the rocker cover off next weekend and see if the valve clearence is correct, and inspect the tapets.

Typical UK Fiat dealer attitude(!)

Seems like they just fobbed you off - that dos'nt sound like normal 'engine noise' to me. You know this yourself, as the car did'nt used to make that sound, but now it does.

It's my guess that they've assumed on your behalf that the car's too old to be bothered with/not worth spending any money on curing the noise.

Ah well. at the end of the day if it comes to it i'll drop a new engine in it, or new cylinder head. But it's not causing any problems at the moment apart from getting on my nerves, so i'll inspect the tappets and valve clearence when i get a chance.
