OK so we all know that the 'B' isn't the cheapest car to insure, so I wondered what your experiences were?

Last year I thought I'd got a bargain from NU Direct at £340 but my renewal comes up soon and a bit of trawling brings up £260 from More Than, which I'm very tempted to go for!

Obviously insurance varies wildly based on many factors, so in summary: Age 38, driving 21 years, 3 points in 2001 for SP30, Postcode PO36, kept on driveway overnight, c.10k miles p/a, 5 years protected NCD, £200 excess, courtesy car, no legals or any other add-ons. Wife (33, no points, own car) as second driver. Fully comp., domestic + commuting only. Car is 2004 model, value around £8000.

Any better suggestions from anyone?

Age 29, 02 plate. garaged. SN1 town centre - on driveway. No points.
Car value at 7K. Fully comp - 6K miles per year - 7yrs no claims protected for £368. Direct Line.

1996 P plate. 2 years ncb, annual premium £780 for central London post code through Marks & Spencer insurance.

I was paying over £1000 a year three years ago but have taken care to make no claims since 2003 so the premium is now coming down.

Male, 57, DE55, garaged, 10K pa, 2005 car - £341 with Chris Knott including strut brace and lowered suspension. 7 years protected. Legal protection, courtesy car.

None of the online insurers would quote for mods without a phone call - none that I found anyway. I tried most of the sites and those that did have a section for declaring details of mods, would not give an online quote. What was interesting was that roll bars were classified along with roll cages. This could well mean that those fake roll hoops would invalidate your insurance if you were tempted to fit them (I'm not!!). When I phoned Admiral and one other (I forget which) to ask about mods they said they would have to refer to their underwriters and would get back to me - but didn't.

Christ! You have to tell the insurance company about the strut brace and lowered suspension?! Better check that out before I make any changes...

Any mods have to be declaired for several reasons:-
Here are a few.

Uprated performance (can the brakes handle it, can the driver handle it, is ther car safe and tested)
Strut brace (£60 mod)
Alloys, etc
Lowered???

Any mod should (If you really want to) be signed off by an approved person. A must of you lower the car.

So the car is not orignal, faster or the handling may have been compromised, therefore more expensive to fix as they have to replace your mods.

Not notifying the insurance company invalidates it. They will not pay out if they find out. My friend changed his exhaust and his insurance company pointed out a paragraph in the insurance doc and told him his insurance is canciled and they will not be paying out.

Best case is thy repair your car with out adding the mods. But tell them.. The only thing is, the price rises quickly.

I hate insurance (companies)... Everytime I have actually needed them to help me out, they have screwed me in some way.

I will however be telling them all about my "mods", I'm not going to give them a reason to screw me!
