Whats the best way to be insured when going to buy a new car? im going to look at one at the weekend but i might buy it, i might not. im travelling quite a way to look at it so i dont want to have to come home sort out the insurance and then go back, i also dont want to have cancel the insurance on my old car and then end up not buying the car!

iv looked at some one day / short term insurance companys online but they all say 21+ and im not 21 till next wednesday!

anyone got any ideas? what would you do?

cheers kevo

Check your policy for driving other cars with permission from the owner. This will give you 3rd party cover.

If you're buying from a dealer, his insurance will cover you as long as you have the trade plates on.

Single day insurance can be bought for about a tenner :)

cheers, i did think ringing my current insureres would be the best bet, just wanted to find out first from you knowledgeable people ;)

I would wait until next Wednesday!

Keep it garaged under lock and key until then.

right... if ur under 25 your insurance will not cover you to drive other cars... even if your fully comp!

There has been a significant clamp down on the old way insurance was run, as young lads were insuring a cheap car fully comp, paying a few £100 and then drving around in their parents very fast sports car.

There are very very very few insurance companies that will allow under 25's to drive another car and be insured w/out being a named driver on that cars polocy.

eg. Fully comp on my car is £500 if i want 3rd party only cover to drive another car it's nearly £800!

The best way to drive another car for a short time is ring up ur current insurance and ask for tempry cover on another car. Should cost about £10-15 for a day or about £30 for the week!

N.B. the other car has to be insured by another party tho and not in ur name, or it will be classed as a 2nd car and will cost loads more!! (this might have changed, but this is wot i was told last time i wanted to insure a car i was buying)

Whot ya gonna buy then??? This blue HLX??

yeah still tempeted by that bravo! but just spoke to him again to get the chassis number and find out whether the cambelt has been done. not good news on the cambelt tho, he said hes rung the fiat garage who have done the servicing and they just have it down as a service, no specific mention of a cambelt. so he said he asked em when they would normally do it and they said between 60 and 80. he said he thought that was a bit vague so he 'apparently' rang another fiat garage and they said 80!

i told him thats just not true in practice but i dont know how to back that up. he claims to have had 2 expert opinions.

actullay come to think of it i think mines had 3 at 90k.

tommy is right about the under 25 and thrird party driving thing, all my previous insurers put the exclusion of that in the clauses, however my current insurer, CIS, seem to allow it!
