Insurance Excess

I am 20 and drive a 1.2 8v punto and have been driving for 1 year. I just had a renewal quote through the post of £900, rang them up and got it for £750 which i thought was good, thats fully comp with a £250 excess.

The thing is there is now a young drivers excess and i have to pay £300 + £250 = £550 excess.

Is there a insurance company that does not do a compulsory excess as all the ones i have checked so far seem to do this, is this a new thing as last year i didnt have this.

When I got the Bravo, I did a Confused.com search, egg didn't give a compulsary excess.

IMO, if your a careful driver it's worth risking a large excess, currently I have a £600 voluntary excess which brings my premium down. I currently pay around £60 a month on a R plate Bravo 1.8 16v fully comp, 21 year old no NCB.

Without the excess its £105.50 per month.

My policy has a fixed excess of £400 and volunteering for any figure between zero and £2000 didn't affect the price; needless to say i didn't volunteer for any.
