Thanks for the pointers Dave-M, i will need to remove the passenger side front wheel to access the auxilary drive belt etc so perhaps if I jack up the front and place a support under the gearbox, will this aid in loosening the engine mount to give more wriggle room to remove the alternator?
Trying to foresee any gotcha's before doing anything I regret.
Cheers

Hi all,
I finally found time to raise the car, rear on wooden blocks and the front on axle stands. Front exhaust to cat unbolted without too much problem (lambada unclipped) and I noticed the top of the catalyzer is about to hole with rust so bought one on ebay to replace that.
Inner wheel arches removed no problem, removed the auxilary belt no problem, bottom alternator bolt loosened. So far so good.
Disconnected the wires to the altenator, bit fiddly, the protective plastic cover was missing but no problem as I avoid rain. Then the big task of top alternatorbolt. Unfortunately i could not lower the engine enough with the equipment I have and the Top alternator bolt refused to play.
So I put it all back together less the new cat as it hadn't arrived and started it up. Guess what ... no lights on the instrument panel after start up, went for a drive and no recurring lights or pulsing lights. When I returned I put the digital meter accross the battery terminals and the reading was steady at 14.45v whatever the revs.
So I will monitor it over the next few days to see if the problem returns, I can only assume at this stage that the connections on the alternator needed to be adjusted/cleaned retightened. Hopefully its okay.
By the way all the outlets I asked for a quote fora replacement altenator wanted the numbers off the existing one which I couldn't get to.
FIAT quoted me 350Euros for the alternator and 92.50 Euros to change it.

Hope this saga helps others in the future
I will post any changes
Steve
