Technical Instrument light switch

Hi Everyone,
Can someone tell me if the instrument light switch is meant to provide two levels of illumination for the instruments or just one level. I have had to replace the switch due to normal wear and noted there were 3 wires coming off it, the switch does have 3 positions; Off - 1 - 2. Currently only Off and position 2 work.
Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks for your reply. The headlight switch in my X works fine, it is the instrument cluster illumination switch that I was asking about. The switch which has the 'gauge' decal on it.

Hi Erich,
I might agree with you as the first position is very dim or not at all, the second position would be considered dim by modern vehicle lightning standards.
