restoring my 500F. Have hit a big problem- can't put back in the driver/passenger glass as each door inner carcass has two metal welded brackets which provide the door strengthening & rubber stops for the bottom of the glass travel. Have attempted to feed the glass in from the bottom but the gap between these brackets is not wide enough to take the width of the glass!!
Can't feed the glass down from the top of the door as I've installed the ali. trim & weather strips. Anyone got any ideas as I'm stuck ???::cry:

thanks Sean - I was afraid that's what I should have done (was following what a previous member posted about reinstalling the door components i.e putting on the quarterlights & ali trim before the glass). Going to have to find another solution as there's no way I'm taking off the ali trim again !!!

You should be able to just release the inside one. Just the bottom section should be enough.
I'm hoping so because I'm waiting for 2 new door glasses to arrive before I can finish my doors. I also fitted the 2 trims on one door before I realised the glass has to go in first!

These guys have a nice little video showing you how to do it. In fact, they have a whole series showing the ins-and-outs of do-it-yourself restoration. Well worth a look. can't give you the link, I'm afraid, but if you whack this into Google, you'll find it.
Des FIATs Türe wird zusammengebaut
Clue: it's in German but you don't need to speak German to get the gist.

thanks for the so quick responses - that's what the forum is all about. I can't remove any of the ali. trim as I was advised by a garage who know more about these cars than most people have forgotten, that the metals clips for the ali.trim are a disaster after restoring a car, and that it's best to bond them in, which I've done. I'm now thinking of drilling out the small spot welds on the small bracket in the door carcass to create a gap big enough to feed the glass through from the bottom & then do a small spot weld again to secure it!

I have just checked mine in advance of getting my new door glass.
My new doors only have one welded bracket. I also checked my old doors and they only had one bracket. This is a 71 L model though so maybe they changed it slightly from the F.
With the 1/4 glass frame loose, I can just about get the glass out from the bottom with a bit of jiggling about. However I am going to wait until I get my new glass just in case.
The 1/4 glass frames are going to take a bit of adjusting in my case. If I do both screws up tight it distorts the frame and make the 1/4 glass very difficult to open & shut. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Also you mentioned rubber stops on the bottom? I don't have any, but that could just be because they were missing. Does anyone have a photo please?
I have attached a diagram of the part I think it is.

My doors have a window lowest position buffer, it fits in a locating hole.

Pulled them from the old doors. 4093054 is correct I would say.

Can photograph if you need, bit of rubber glued in will do the same, not sure they are available.

I'll second that. There's one stop bracket; something like a round 13 to 19mm blanking grommet stuck on top would do just fine.

On the aluminium trims, I think the confusion might come from the need to fit them before fitting the quarter-lights. I wouldn't have wanted to be given the job of assembling the doors at the factory..it would have put me off 500s for life.:yuck:

I'll second that- but there must have been special tools etc available at the time at the factory to fit the trims etc, bearing in mind how many cars were built in total. With the help of a very practical neighbour, we were able to fit the door glass by cutting the bracket in the door carcass and by heating the metal secured at the bottom of each door glass, were able to remove the metal pieces (without breaking the glass - but it was scary) and then fed the glass in thro. the top of the doors. Problem is even the Haynes manual for the 500 is wrong for my car, as it says you feed the glass in from the bottom. Mine's a '71 500F and the door carcass has been changed from that on earlier cars. I made the mistake of not doing a "dry run" assembly of all the door parts, otherwise I would have realised you have to put the door glass in first before doing anything else.
