General Installing SAT NAV

have most of you fixed your sat navs to the right near the by the window column.
How did you run the power cable to the ciggie lighter.

I got one of these from Halfords Sendai Sat Nav Universal Dashboard Mount. Sits on dash to left of driver, then cable from my Navman S300T just runs down the the right of radio and then to the lighter. Highly stable!

It should be on the same side of the wheel that traffic is coming towards you on ideally. Means you can keep a better eye on the road in your perifrial vision.

So in UK should be on right of wheel by 'A' Pillar (RHD car), and if driving on the opposite side of the road, in the middle of the dash if that makes sence?

I don't, my Garmin has a long battery life, so very rarely need to charge it up on a journey.

Normally from glove box (were all my eletrickery is kept), over the dash and behind the steering shroud.

TBH the places they stick power outlets these days is silly like by the handbrake

Safest place in terms of keeping an eye on anything towards your front is undoubtedly the middle as shown here. It only takes a small movement of the eye to read sat nav screen whereas on the right you'd be largely unaware of anything happening to your far left.

A big bonus is your navigator can read it too which would be hopeless on the far right position

Used it like this for 4 years now and one very useful feature of the swivel mount, as shown, is that it can be turned towards the passenger for inputing alternative routes / blocking roads etc - which would not be safe for the driver to be doing :shakehead:

But stuff on the right coming towards you is more important than a sheep in a field or something isn't it?

Hmmm..... so children not so important then :shrug:

I personally would have thought accident risk is mainly from nearside but that ceases to be an issue if mounted centrally since your peripheral vision (as you pointed out ) should cover everything from the front.

I can understand some folks not liking the 'in your face' aspect but that's a completely different issue to safety

Why don't you sit in your Stilo and think that through

I assure you it's nearest in the position I've shown (which to be be fair is actually off centre towards the driver) unless you want to try and mount it directly on top of the dash ; and if you turn your eyes to the right, to read it as if it was in the far corner, you'll notice you lose vision to the far left.

The only setup I've ever observed which I though was better was on a top end Audi. They incorporates the actual lane change instructions within the very dash itself whilst leaving the map display on the centre console.

once the device arrives I will try both ways,but most reports I have read state they should be mounted on the right hand side

Well the sat nav arrived and tried both places to mount,the left was far to intrusive for me!!! looked better and personally found it easier to read on the right hand side.
Navigon 6310 which is a 4.3 widescreen,I was hoping the left hand mount would be better as I now have an issue with the power cable.

Is that using a windscreen mount because I agree that would be horrible if centrally mounted ?

I mounted mine directly on the dash, which personally I think is best, but others have used a vent mount (which could be used on either side) :chin:

Its different in every car I think. The Stilo was better on the right hand side of the dash, whereas the GP is better in the middle due to the massive A pillars.
