tuning options on a 1.4 are very very limited i'm afraid. Rather than get an induction kit, spend half as much on a K&N panel filter to put into the original airbox. You do you not have to tell the insurance, as its not considered performance enhancing, but on a 1.4 will give you the same gain. If you are lucky 1 bhp extra, though with mine i found it to be more responsive. wether or not it was a placebo affect i dont know. I also had a powerflow exhaust fitted to my 1.4, which sounded grand, but again, for the money, got me bugger all performance gain. (another 1 bhp if i was lucky)

with adding a K&N Panel filter instead of a cone kit. will it improve the sound or just that 1 (fantastic) bhp. ..?

just the fantastic 1 bhp. cone filter will give sound if thats what you want?(thats usually what chavs want imho) but you will need to inform your insurance. also, theres no guarantee of any bhp increase, even just 1 bhp...

Can you put an induction kit on a 1.2 and if you can is there any improvement in performance?

I've just stuck one on mine (1.2) and all I've got is noise when the throttle is floored.
