induction kit.....is this true?

An Air filter is an Air Filter. A bigger engine needs more air, because it burns more air and petrol. Chances are this air filter cannot filter more than a certain amount of cubic centimeters of air per minute (or whatever the measurement is)

re

its a bit hit and miss really, different car shave different size inlets, so i woudlnt liek to gaurantee it fits any car! also i'm sure the BMC's shoudl have a proper air duct, not a bit of £2 foil pipe.

thats wot i was thinking!

im not sure, i want a good induction kit for my 1.6, not something that just adds a bit of noise and i was told that a bmc cda was a good choice to go for if you could get one cheap.

i dunno tho?

does anyone know enough about induction kits?
please help me?

maxim

DO NOT GET A K&N, they only make noise and if anything lose you power. The CDA is the best one but costs the Earth and is an absolute bitch to fit, it's also the only one I'd consider (having already had a K&N and then CDA on my 1.6). If I were to go down this route with my current car I'd just go for a panel filter as it does virtually the same job for a fifth of the price.

So to conclude this story - get a panel filter!

re

from experience, panel filter and mayeb helping cold air feed is what a lot people do, on scoobies for example people mostly just get an sti airfilter which is oem part anyway, as the cooling and air feed is pretty well worked out in the first place

so what do you lot reckon to thatpiece of kit above?
is cheap?

sorry to sound stupid but where is the panel filter at the moment?

any links to some good ones?

cheers, maxim

The existing air filter for you're car is in a plastic box above the passenger side wheel, you can't miss it when you open the bonnet. BMC sell panel filters too, try looking for that.

As Allan stated, the cold air feed is already there. Any exposed induction kit is gonna take in warm engine air - reducing any possible benefits.

o i see, yer i new where that was, just unsure if i had missed the panel filter. so basicly replace the box with a panel filter, fix it in place and bob is your uncle?

but surely it being out in the open means hot air will still expose it?

thats why that bmc one looked good because its enclosed?

No, you're replacing the paper air filter within the box - the box doesn't get taken out. 2 minute job. With an induction kit the box will need removed.

Are BMC panel filters reusable? Do you clean them and reuse them?

right cheers matt i will just do that.
bmc sell them for about £30quid so that will do me nicely.

you still get the nice sound though dont you?

been a great help

maxim

@Joske, I'm sure the filter element is made of the same stuff as the induction kit, it's just rectangular instead of conical. So yes, it should be reusable.

@Maxim, from memory you should still get a good roar, it may not be as pronounced as an induction kit though.

re

as far as i know most aftermarket panel filters are re-usable, normally give them a clean/hoover out etc! but for the price its still worth changing ever now and then.

you wont get quite the same roar as an induction kit, if you want to increase this there is a resonator box you can take off, look for a pipe going to an empty box behind front bumper, its only there to take away sound, or at very worst drill some holes in your oe airbox, so you still have cold air feed but also hear the noise from by the filter

if you do the drillign please please make sur you do it the right side of the panel filter

an air filter is an air fileter at the end of the day. its not going to ruin your engine or make your car noticibly faster. pop down to halfords and buy a £20-£30 ripspeed one. saves you money and sounds good

actually, an inadequate air filter CAN ruin your engine. just thought that needed correction.

plus, any sort of performance filter is going to have a different sound. I quite liked my K&N 57i because you only really heard it if you blipped the gas pedal or hit fairly high rpms(ie over 5k) and twice a year i could take it off, spray it with cleaner solution, hose off, and leave to dry. a quick squirt of filter oil from the cleaning kit after a few hours drying and it was good for another 6 months.

My K&N was bloody manky after a couple of years and I cleaned it regularly, it did sound good but it also ended up sapping performance. I did damage once when I took it out and found a huge spider clinging to the underside - I ended up throwing it about 30 feet because I fooking hate spiders
